Yesterday I was just about on the red line with my fuel gauge. I went and tossed $20 in and took off. I look down at my gauge and it read above the Full line. It stayed there for the rest of my drive back to work. By the time I got there it had come down to where it should be, a little less than half a tank. When I left work again on start up the fuel gauge shot up to above the full line again and stayed there all the way home from work...when I got home I sat in the drive way for a few min. and it started to drop back down to where it should be VERRRRRRRY slowly. Is this a sign of something a miss in the tank or something with the gauge itself?

Time for a new sending unit. My car ALWAYS reads full because my sending unit is bad. Its a $100 part. Drop the tank, pull the old one out, unplug it, put new one in, plug it in, remount gas tank and you'll be good to go.

damn $100! Can't I just get one from the junk yard? How big are they? can it fit in my pocket? what makes them go out? [patriot]

It'd be tough to fit it in a pant pocket, but I guess you might be able to put it in a jacket pocket or wrap it up in a jacket. It's shaped kinda funny for it to fit in a pocket. Its a round disk, with an arm and floater attached to it. I tried finding a picture, but couldn't.

The unit is a floater attached to an arm and the floater floats on top of the fuel level. When it goes up and down, the arm sends an electric current depending on what level its at. Mine won't read above a certain fuel level, so it always reads full. I don't know what specifically makes them break though.

I guess you could use one from a Pick n' Pull. I just prefer to get my parts new so that I can trust it will last for a while.

EDIT: speeling

Didn't do it again today either? Maybe its just the first signs of it going out? Anyone know "why" these go bad? Would running the tank low or running out of gas a lot result in this part malfuncioning?

My guess would just be age, man. These cars are starting to get pretty old. Shit breaks when its old. I can't even remember half the shit on the list of stuff I need to have repaired. Auto locks, fuel guage, driver's side keyhole, new headlights... The list never ends. Its no wonder the car only leaves my garage once every two weeks.

Funny you say that. Once I get everything working on mine not more than a few days later something small goes out. Just the day before yesterday the driver power window stopped working. Lucky for me it stopped in the up possition....back to the junk yard. Also I need new headlights. I bought those bright ones they say last twice as long and 2 months later one blew out. And no I didn't touch it with my hands lol. They are old and getting older by the day. Still fun though....the things that go out thus far are pretty minor. No more than a few buck or a trip to the yard. Knock on wood
