What makes a muffler drone? like the more pipe you run past the muffler the less drone you get.. when i ran dumps, it drones major.

it has to do with harmonics, like how an organ piano deal makes its different sounds with different length pipes.
as a general rule, the shorter the pipe is after the muffler the louder it will be, and the more it will drone.
also, chambered mufflers drone a lot more than straight through designed ones.

flows + turndowns = major drone!
straight through mufflers + tailpipes = less/no drone!

Not nessesarly true...I had 3 chamber Flows with tail pipes and they droned a lot less than when I had Borla's, but what you're saying is a good rule of thumb though.....

That's weird because I have 3 chamber flows on my drop and borlas on my hatch and the droptop drones a LOT. It annoys the hell out of me, and it's an auto, which = less drone than stick. The Borlas drone a little bit, but only around town. On the freeway they are as almost as quiet as stock. Maybe mine aren't broken in yet or something...?

In my 65' I had 2 chambers and turn downs. Pretty loud, pretty gay. I just got hooked up with some tail pipes and tips now, and now it drones, but is a lot fucking quiter.
It sounds a lot better to me also. Sounds more tuned and not as raw as before.
clifnotes:
2 chambers w/turndowns= loud zero drone, raw sound.
2 chambers w/tail pipes= more tuned and quiet

I've got 3 chambers and turndowns and it drones from 2100-2500, which is the freeway cruising range. It sucks, but you get used to it. I'd do tailpipes, but when the panhard and torque arm go on, I doubt it'd fit.
