Ok my car started to clack the other day. I first thought it was an exhuast leak. The clack got a little louder. Well I then thought it was a case of loud rockers. When I came home I adjust the rockers, found a few to seem looser then others. Put the intake back together and started her up, and the clacking continued. I then checked for exhuast leaks, thought I found it in a leak in the collecter. I tightened the collecter and stoped that leak and it helped nothing. I don't know of anything else really that could be causing the clacking sound. Maybe somebody can point me in new directions. I am really frusterated at this point and just really want to get this problem solved since it happened soooo randomly.

What is your oil pressure like? Hopefully it isn't rod knock...

Oil Pressure is great. No problem there at all. How could I even tell if it was Rod knock?

A few months ago I was cruisin in my Mustang then out of nowhere it started tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap. The tap would speed up as the RPMs did, at first I thought it was a lifter. Further inspection resulted in noticing it was a broken pushrod, my pushrods have these little ball things on the ends and one of those balls had broken off. So anyway, your problem could be a lifter(s) or pushrod(s).

Get a long scrwedriver and put it to your ear and start placing it on the valve covers and diferent points on the block. You can narrow down what area the noise is coming from.

Tryed the stethscope(sp) but that doesn't matter now cause whatever was messed up gave loose and broke. I was accelerating heard some nasty noise and the engine died and won't start up. I am thinking it was a push rod problem in the first place andnow turned into a broken push rod. I will pull the covers off tomorrow after work and inspect the damage. [Frown]

Psychic Friends Network diagnosis says...

One cam lobe and lifter gone, pranged the pushrod.

Sorry man. I have been going thru this same crap for a month now.

well from visual with the Valve cover off, the #3 piston intake valve/valve spring is still compressed without the rocker on, and the spark plug won't come out. More Details will come this weekend, when the damn thing gets torn out!

it sucked or bent a valve im guessing bent cuz i dont think stangs can suck a valve like air cooled motors can but i could be wrong. im just a backyard mechanic so i know enough shit to go fast and have a good idea of whats wrong when somethin breaks. bust of the head bolts and check it out and take a good look at the pistons too cuz if ya bent a valve it probably ate the piston too. if you can get it to start and it runs like a diesel rig then you better be ready to shell out some cash to get her back on the road.
good luck man

Well, he might be talking about the turbo 2.3 (optional on the 84 GT350) which is roughly 500lbs lighter than a 5.0...
