My combo is box stock afr 165 and tfs stage one cam as of now. First off what ratio rockers should i run? And second what intake manifold should i run? If it makes any difference in piston to valve clearance with 1.7s, i am going to be running the stock bottom end for a while.

Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM intake manifold.
PORTED longtube headers!

you may have to swap out valvesprings depending on what seat and open pressures (and coil bind if any) come out to(no idea what valvesprings you have). coil bind can do real cool stuff like shoot valve locks and drop valves into the motor when running

AFR's come with plenty of spring pressure for the weak-ass TFS 1 cam. You'll be fine on that.
The TFS intake line is not as good as the Edelbrock....& quite ugly IMO. AFR's are made to match the Edelbrock line. TFS intakes are a better match for TW heads.

IMO the X303 is one of the best Bang-for-the-buck smogable cams out there. But if it were me.....
I'd notch the pistons & throw in AaronC's current cam. 232/228 110LSA with some 1.6's....& a set of Ed C's PS3 valvesprings ($125 shipped)
Of course....not everybody wants a 330+RWHP stock bottom end setup. LOL
An X303 should get you over 300RW.

I'd still caution the buyer that 1.72 rockers on stock valvesprings (who knows what generation they are) could be problematic. With the .510 exhaust lift on the TFS#1 cam, that comes out to 0.55 for 1.72 rockers. Might be great, might not. Valves and the location of the lock key are a variable, as are installed height and spring cup dimensions (if applicable). It all adds up to check it yourself, IMHO. You can by just rotating it by hand and using feeler gauges, there is a minumum clearance between spring coils required (touching always bad).
good luck, just trying to help without throwing out broad generalizations. I had trouble with a combo before that "should" of had no problems either, a xe-274HR cam on GT-40P heads, they were the springs spec'd for the kit but I screwed up the installed height (easy fix by machining spring cups on the head). Long story short I had some awesome and very frustrating valvetrain destruction. Now I don't assume any more.

Your fault for not checking your POS GT40P's.
I KNOW the exact specs of AFR's spring setup....including the installed height used, valves used, & shims used. There will be NO problems running the TFS 1 with 1.7's on the stock AFR165 springs.
