I have a 351C with a 280H cam. I've broken several roll pins which hold the distributor gear on the shaft and have now begun to eat the gear. I replaced the gear, put a few miles (maybe 25 or so) on it, and just today pulled the distrubutor to check if there was any wear. Again, the gears teeth are almost completely gone! I posted about this problem about a month ago and someone told me to check the cam retainer plate. I pulled the plate and there was little to no wear on the side facing the cam. As though the cam isn't even pushing against it? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know what material the cam gear needs to be for that cam?

No, I've just been replaceing them with factory cast steel gears.

This is most likely your issue as many aftermarket cams require a different distributor gear
