How much would a good rear end shop charge me? How much would one off you guys charge me working out of your garage? I already have the gears.

A shop is upwards of $300-$350, some are more.

I charge $175 ($200 if you don't want to buy anything; seals, gear oil, crush sleeve, etc), takes about 2-3 hours.

[BS flag]

My bud charges $430 and thats with $180 or so FMS gears. Includes everything you need installed. Of course less if you already have gears, no where near 300 bucks though.

Get a shop to do it you'll be much more happy and with a warranty for the install.

Either rear end specialties in santa clara or valley differentials here in stockton.

damn bro JohnB is trying to help out. And yeah a lot of shops do charge around $300 just for labor. And if you have problems with the install, john ain't just going to forget about you. And Rearend charges $480.

JohnB is a stand up guy. if something did go wrong (which WONT) he'd hook you up. [patriot]

I'd just rather have a shop do it IMO.

If something goes wrong I'll just make the call and report them.

I just don't want misleading info to be given as that he will never be able to find it cheaper than 300 bucks at a shop.

Just don't go to a tranny shop for a damn gear change.

Some people are very very stupid I swear.

I've seen this many times where another shop sends over a car a customer brought to them.

Say it's an exploded rear like the ever so famous gov lock. He'll charge say 1000 bucks to replace whats wrong and the shop will turn around and charge $1600 for nothing more than being a middle man.

BTW I wasn't trying to knock JohnB I'm sure he's a cool cat as I've heard from many.

Who said anything about NOT being able to find a shop that will charge less than $300?? [Confused]

I just called rearend Specialties and it's $225 for labor on an 88 5.0 with drum brakes($25 more for disc)...If you add $189 for FMS gears how much is that?...

If you know any other shops HOOK US UP!...

Me personally, would rather someone like John B (with 8.8 experience) install the gears rather than some Sequoia Instutite drop out that only knows about breaking his Crapmaro's 10 bolt, install the gears... [patriot]

I was just at rearend specialties in santa clara about a month ago. I brought them my 4.10s, bearings, and tlok rebuild kit. It was only $270 out the door and it took about an hour and a half. I recommend them.

Rearend specialties for sure. I brought them 4.10's, an auburn pro, a full install kit, axles and a girdle, only charged me $200 for labor!! Dropped it off at 12 pm, picked it up at 4 pm [patriot]

Since you live in the east bay, try Differential
doctors in San Leandro. I've never had a problem with him. He's put a spool in my car and done the bearings in my truck. Prices are pretty much the same as RES.

John at Differential Doctors is a scam. He installed some gears and a month later it starts whining from the rear. He didn't bother with it because he said it was the transmission and I know it wasn't. I went to Rearend specialties for a second opinion and it turned out to be the axle bearings that were suppose to be changed out with the gear swap. [BS flag]

That short A-hole at Diff. Doctors installed some 3.73's in my 89 GT 2 years ago and I suspected something when my rpm gauge wasn't that off from the stock 3.27's. The speedo gear was never changed. A year later I'm getting axles axles installed at a friend's house and the 3.73 gears that fool sold me turned out to be 3.55's. [Mad]
