The distributor gear has maybe 6 of the 17 teeth which used to reside there. Looked down the hole and the cam gear seems to be fine.
Heres the problem: I've sheared the roll pin. which holds the gear on, off a half dozen times over the last two years. Each time it was several hundred miles from the last time. Now I've completely de-toothed the gear, but the roll pin is fine.

If you have an aftermarket cam sometimes you have to change which type of metal the distributor gear is made of. Call MSD and ask them or your cam manufacturer

are you using the correct distributor gear.
and are you positive the cam retainer plate is still tight? in other words, is the cam walking?
i had a ford cam go on a journey once. the gear on the cam was fine, the distributor gear was fucked.
i rebuilt that motor though. i didnt like metal pieces floating around.
