every 1000 miles I seem to loose a quart. could this be right.I don't seem to be leaking any, also I'm not blowing any smoke from the exaust. The last time I changed the oil I did not have a lot of oil inside the filter. This engine has about 10,00 miles. any ideas????????thanx

You won't always see smoke when the cars burning oil. When you changed your oil and the filter wasn't full what was the oil level like prior to the oil change? This is odd for such a new motor. What type of oil pan are you running? Maybe hook a oil pressure gauge up and see where its at.

I'd suggest doing a leak down or a compression test before you start taking things apart...

Every autoshop class I've ever had, the teacher has said 1 quart per 1000 miles is normal. On my ex's Jetta 2.0 that was about the average oil consumption. On my current mustang, at first it was burning a bit of oil, but now it doesn't seem to burn any. With only 10k on it, it does seem a bit excessive, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

What he said. Mustangs that I have owned tend to burn lil oil. Seems like it's normal especially if u dawg on it.

What he said. Mustangs that I have owned tend to burn lil oil. Seems like it's normal especially if u dawg on it.

I lose a quart every 1000 miles or so. But then again my 5.0 has about 130K miles on the motor and it still runs like a champ...

I don't know about you all but if my motor had 10K on it and was burning 1 qrt. every 1K I'd be pissed. Stock motors burn oil. Aftermarket motors should not if there built with good parts.

well what kind of motor do you have is it an all raced out motor or just a stock replacement because say you are running like 347 stroker and you would have short piston skirts kinda like a hokey puck and those can lose oil just because the skirt is so small and on some high end race engines the piston is not as tight sense they tend to rev higher and those burn oil too i am not sure sir just throwing in my 2 cents

Seriously...on an engine that new, that is unusual. Did the owner beat on it for the first 10,000 miles, though? Anyway, I also use a quart every 1,000 miles, but my bottom end has 125,000 miles on it. Damn, that Mobil Synthetic is expensive... [Big Grin]

thanx for all the info....the engine is a stock 302 with factory gt 40 heads,cobra intake,24 injectors , 70mm air meter, 65mm tb and I do have 373 gears so i do wind out pretty quick. The engine does not run bad at all it , as a matter of fact it runs very strong. thanx again guys.

What about water Level? You might have a Head gasket Issue. I would do a leak down for sure, and my mustang didn't eat oil till the head gasket was going out.
