So I've heard a couple of people say lately that a fresh oil change helps you get through smog. Can anybody explain why this is? I've also heard that a quart of ATF used in an oil change will really clean out a lot of crap from the engine. Would doing this help at all either? Sorry, these kinds of questions pop into my head late at night and I can't help but wonder

putting in the atf fluid in an oil change would only be good for cleaning it out because it is a lighter consistancy just use some kerosene or go to the store and get the cleaner and run that for about 5 mins or so and then drain it and change oil and filter that will do the cleaning purpose atf could do some damige not good for long term and as to oil change helps smog it depends on what you are falling it could be because you have an ob1 catalatic converter and if you change over to obd2 it can block a lot of the nitrogen the knock sensors that obd1 was not made to be caught with the ob1 or egr the list goes on with out info

Don't worry, i don't have any intention of doing this (now anyway) since I don't think I'll be seeing or touching the internals of my engine for a while. I'm just curious and love to know about this kind of shit Is ATF significantly thinner than say 5w 30 oil?

i am not sure right now too late but yah it is thinne i will have to find out how much thinner but you can go to kragens and get a oil cleaning kit and just poor it in before and oil change

WTF?
ATF is about the same viscosity as 5w30 and cleans the engine due to the amount of detergents in it...
I ran out of breath before finishing reading your post....("run-on sentance")
