5th works best [Big Grin] you are just moving the syncro's over to that side so preferabely a gear on that side

[Roll Eyes] The reason reverse grinds is because it isnt Synchronized. When you put the tranny in a gear that is Synchronized, it stops the tranny internals from spinning. This allows you to engage the reverse gear without grinding.
Fifth gear is probably the worst to use since some trannys have 5th-reverse gear lock-outs (this prevents people from accidentily shifting into reverse from fifth gear). My Tremec wont allow a 5th to reverse shift, no matter how hard I try to force it in. I have to move it to neutral to release the lock out mechanism first.

1st-4th will all work. Just pick which one is easiest for you. Personally, I like and use 4th.

So was I. I still think you are special because 5th to reverse doesn't work for you though. [dance]

Reverse is actually a slider gear (with no syncros like 91 5.0 said) that is added to a counter shaft gear and an output shaft gear to reverse the rotation of the output shaft...

Basically, from what I remeber, (rebuilding my last T5 myself) was that from going from first gear to reverse was easiest to throw the reverse slider gear into place and engaging reverse...I've always hit 1st gear, then reverse if for some reason reverse would not engage...

Because the reverse gears in a T5 are all straight cut (ever hear the reverse gears whine in reverse, well thats why) it is hard for them to engage each other without one of them spinning slightly...So, when you hit reverse, it helps to have a VERY slight roll going (in either direction)... [patriot]
