The guages are different. We took my 89 guages and hooded them up in my sons 91 to try and do some trouble shooting.
The tach & speedo worked but the idiot lights were different.
Not sure what the difference is for the center console is but I am pretty sure that Ford didn't change the actual body of the car to make the dash fit. That would have cost money.
Same reason the springs for an 87 are the same as a 2002.
