Are glasspacks installed in place of mufflers? Do they affect smog testing? My dad had mentioned putting glasspacks on my Tbird (he thought I already had some on, thanks to a huge hole in the muffler). Could I just have some welded in place of the mufflers, in front of the rear axle? How do they sound, compared to the stock exhaust and to exhaust systems like Flowmasters?

I believe someone long ago referred the sound of glasspacks to what a UPS truck on steroids would sound like.
I personally have heard glasspacks and after a few hundred miles they SOUND LIKE SHIT!

k, you need to have 2 tailpipes in order to pass smog, right? and will a big hole in one of them, with or without a tailpipe, cause the car to fail smog? I'm thinking (since glasspacks are such a bad idea ) that I get some Flowmaster mufflers and put em in, since I need to get the car smogged next month.

I think 2 chamber flows will sound good on a 5.0 T-Bird. Go with that instead of the glasspacks...eventhough I've never heard glasspacks on a car....but flows are a safe bet!

go with something other than flows, since 90% of mustangs have em. go with mac, or borla, or someone else, imho.
in order to have glasspacks, you need the following on your car:
1. 13" dayton wire wheels
2. crome fender trim, with matching gas cap cover
3. hydraulics
4. magically turn into an impala ss.

borla If I had the money that would be my next exhaust!!!
As for passing smog with a hole in your muffler I have before. 91 Explorer had a hole in the muffle the size of a silver dollar. Passed with flying colors.

Why should I get something other than Flows just cuz Mustangs have them? Are there others that are the same price and sound as well (or better)?

I loved my mac's b4 I found that they had several rusted holes in them.... when I put on my o/r xpipe, i found out reaaaaly fast,
but they sounded mean... now I have 3 chamber flows and I would have gotten mac's again if I hadnt found these for cheap...

he i got glass packs on the cobra, and it doesnt sound like shit, it is loud as hellm but it is suppose to be cause it has sidepipes
but i would not put glass packs on a mustang
and besides, my glass packs are purpose;y put on backwards so they are basically straight pipes that look like mufflers, so i dont get that weird rasp, it still pops a little on decceleration but thats straight pupes for ya
if u want a mean sounding idle, get some old style 2 chamber flows, if u want a nice loud runmble at WOT, but a quiet idle, get borlas

yeah yeah yeah, i forgot
it has a 5.0 HO, the exhaust runs under the body
IT WILL SOUND EXACTLY LIKE A MUSTANG
Posted by zpyro35 (Member # 3745) on

I wish it had an HO. I got the short end of the stick with a 165 hp SO.
So what will sound the same as a Flowmaster muffler and cost the same?

on the eastside(san jo') i see/hear them all the time on old impala's,they sound like crap on any car! flowmasters are a much better choice!IMO!

If you feel like driving to Daly City you could probably get the job done for like just over 2 bills at a place called Goldenauto
