Well I'm going from a basically stock.....to extremely beefed up (in my opinion) engine set up. Right now I have nothing more than JBA Headers, Bassani Catted X-Pipe, and a Borla cat-back. Here is what I'm adding....
Vortech V-1 Supercharger
Edelbrock Performer RPM upper/lower Intake Manifold
Edelbrock 75mm Throttle Body
Edelbrock 75mm 94-95 Elbow
Pro-M 80mm MAF
36# injectors
Edelbrock Performer RPM Heads (2.02/1.60)
3/8" intake spacer
Trick Flow Stage 1 Cam
1.7 Rockers
New Pushrods
All new head gaskets/bolts
All new intake gaskets/bolts
9 way adjustable timing chain
Do you guys think this set up will perform well together? I'm going to be getting a chip and a dyno tune from Byron very soon after everything is installed.
***A buddy of mine says I may have a problem with the 2.02/1.60 Edelbrock heads on a stock short block with the TFS S1 cam, and 1.7 rockers.
Will I have any piston/valve clearance issues?
Will I need to have to do any flycutting?
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED! I REALLY DONT WANT TO HAVE MY ENGINE GO KABOOM ON ME!

Everything looks good except the heads with 2.02 valves. You will run into insufficient piston to valve clearance with stock pistons. I don't even think 2.02 valves will clear with a stock cam, much less TFS cam with 1.7 rockers. I have the Edelbrock 2.02 valve heads and they would not work with my stock pistons and a mere .512 lift cam. Cast pistons on your stock shortblock are somewhat of a concern with boost since they have zero tolerance for detonation. As long as detonation and air fuel ratio are kept in check you will be OK.

May I have a little more detailed reason as to why? That is a major concern of mine and I just want to make sure everything goes smoothly, and if you can help explain to me what needs to be done that would be great. Thanks!

well you should just buy a crate,so you dont hae to be worried :patriot:thats alot for a stock block dont ya think?to me its kinda like risking it. Buy a Shortblock

To those of you who could not run 2.02's with a stock shortblock...you set something up wrong. Before I tore my STOCK 93 Cobra shortblock down, I mock'd up my 2.02 RPM's on it. With a TFS Stage 1 cam and 1.6's, I had more than ample Piston-to-valve clearance. Now I have STOCK type (read: TRW replacement), forged pistons in the block..and no problems at all with 2.02's and a TFS stage 1 cam. Do your homework first, and a good combo will result. Granted, with 1.7's it would be closer, but that's why you DEGREE a cam when you install it, not just align the dots and hope for the best. As for the pistons, they are NOT cast..they are hypu's and are MORE than capable of withstanding boost. It's all in the tune. Run it lean...be prepared to have a few dead holes.
My questions would be more along the lines of...
How many miles are on this stock shortblock?
Are you runnin' 1.7's because everyone told you to, or because you are attempting to increase the effective lift of the camshaft?
I didn't see a new fuel pump or FPR in there, do you already have them?

I just rebuilt my stang homie I recommend what Eddie said. GET A CRATE MOTOR. Might seem like a little more expensive but u will be happy afterwards. I had someone build my engine and there was always little things that annoy the SHIT out of you after a while. Everything is kool now but I wish I would have just bought a crate motor. Buy the a motor from Coast High Performance they got good shit for a cool price. Good luck homie

I'd ditch the 1.7s for some 1.6s and you should be fine on valve clearance. I'm running 2.02/1.60 valves with a TFS stage 1 cam and I'm fine. But that is on 1.6 rockers. Also, like the other dude said. More fuel = More power. Definitely get a AFPR. And be careful if its a high mileage motor.

The cam will clear with the 1.7's no problem. I'll make sure of that.
It's not going in 'dot-to-dot'. It's going in on a 110-112ICL which will give more clearance on the intake valve then straight up.
With a mear 50K on your shortblock it should be fine.
Really, the only thing I'd worry about is making too much power or doing something stupid like bumping timing up to 15 base.
But, with a tune you should have no problem limiting power & not F-ing with shit once it's done.
Have it built right, limit boost to 8-10psi, have it tuned right, & it'll be fine.

Right now I'm at 51,500 miles on the stock block
I'm running the 1.7's (but am still looking at some 1.6's) because Shaun, who will be doing a lot of the build, says he can make them work well with my set-up and I trust him to do that.
I dont have a FPR, but I am running a BBK 255lph fuel pump which was installed about 2,000 miles ago

It should be just fine. I would definitely throw an AFPR on there too.
No offense, but if Shaun is doing the work, and you trust him, why the heck are you posting questions here about it?

Ha, that's a good point. I trust Shaun fully, I just had someone talkin to me the other day from TheCorralm who sold me the blower, and he was just scaring me I guess. The main thing he said is that the pistons need to be flycut
and if thats was to happen then I would have no problems...So I was just checking if someone has experienced a problem with these heads as far as size goes and what I was getting myself into.

I hear ya. FYI, I have 2.02/1.60's on mine now with 1.6's and stock-sized valve relief pistons. The cam I'm runnin'? TFS stage 1.

Good luck, and trust shaun! hey shaun, my buddy wants to know if you could install his X-cam sometime?
Posted by 93PONY (Member # 60) on
:
I check piston to valve on all cams I install...after I degree them in.
& even if you wanted a HUGE ass cam, notching the pistons is not a problem. I have access to & have used the Isky notching tools....which work excellent.
I'd also recomend a Kirban fuel pressure regulator. Even though Byron will set it to 40psi (vaccum off), your stock one is around 42-43 & is not as reliable as the Kirban.

a stock block can handle around 480 good, and yes itll work youll have to have a fmu since u have smaller then 42lb inj, 2.02 might work cuz the afr are 2.02 i believe and i know a lot on stock piston with different cams. you should be fun stay in the 9-10lb boost range though ...good luck =P

I think you will be really happy with your set-up, just get that FPR and get that tune and after the tune don't touch anything, don't worry about the block 51k aint shit!

Ok John Whats heads are you running?..The Edelbrock 2.02's require new pistons for piston to valve clearance!....
http://edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html
From Edelbrocks web-site and 2003 catalog
~"Performer 50-state street legal heads provide outstanding bolt-on performance for 1965-95 289, 302 and 351 Windsor V8s. Capable of 300+ hp when matched with the Edelbrock Performer Power Package, the 1.90" intake valves are for use with stock pistons and the high-flow 2.02" intake valves are for use with aftermarket pistons notched for valve clearance ."

Hey Black94, do you believe EVERYTHING you read?
I'm running the 60259's and they've been cut for loc-wire gaskets. Of COURSE they are gonna say "requires aftermarket pistons". I can only imagine how many folks would just slap sh!t together and attempt to run it without checking clearances. Like I said, check it out..you'll find out there's no problem with running these heads on a stock shortblock. I'm sure Shaun is gonna take care of it.
