Ok, I just heard today from PAW that my distributor might need an iron cam gear instead of the steel one it comes with (MSD Pro Billet for 94-95 351 mustang) since Im running a hyd flat-tappet cam. True or False and why?

I had to send my dist. in to MSD and change to a steel gear because I am using a hydrolic cam

If I am not mistaken, the only thing that would affects dist gear choice would be the use of a roller vs. non roller. I know that with a non roller, you can use a cast or steel gear. With a roller I thought you needed a bronze gear. But I also thought that a bronze gear would work with either setup. Maybe someone can set me straight.

true but on a roller you can have the cam made to accept a cast gear [Wink]

The dist already has a steel gear and I am using a hyd cam but it is a NON-roller. Thats why I need to know if the steel will work or if I need the Iron, and if I have to send it in to MSD to get changed or if I could do it.

you can do it. it is a slight press fit onto the shaft... and the roll pin also holds it in.... i think you can handle it [Wink]

i just remember
the tfi distributor that came with the coupe, the stock one, has a steel gear on it and it was used with that cam

so call johnb and ask him whats up, he did build it

Best I can recall, Bronze for Roller...Steel/cast for non-roller cam.

So yes, you will use a steel/cast gear with a non-roller cam.
