I'm just trying to learn a few things. I kinda have an idea about the answer's but thought I would ask to get the real scoop. First one is. What exactly does a stall converter do and how does it work. The second is the same question but for a transbrake.

A stall convertor puts you in a higher rpm range faster and holds higher rpm before slipping. A transbrake locks the transmission in reverse and first and when you get off the button its something like a clutch drop from what I'm told.

#1: They are torque converters. ALL converters have what is called a "stall" speed. This is in reference to the RPM it takes to "lock" the converter up (through fluid force) thus transmitting the output of the engine to the transmission. The converter has turbine blades inside, and depending on the pitch, angle, length and number of blades, this determines how/when the converter will begin to operate. It's all based on this. The more blades, reduced angles, and bigger "balloon" (area the blades are housed in), the lower the stall speed. Vice-versa for higher stall speeds.
#2: a transbrake works similar to a clutch. You can put a load against it (setting the brake) and upon release, full engagement of the tranny occurs.

I just had a PI Stallion 3000 put in by the guys in the attached article. It definately accelerates faster. I still have to test how high of an RPM I can launch at...
