It's something like 40w90 - just find some standard gear oil. The bottle will say on it, "rear end gear oil" or "gear oil". Make sure you get one with friction modifier in it, or buy some friction modifier to add to it (necessary when dealing with posi)! and watch out, cause that shit stinks.

Also advise on gear oil for an 89 lx 5.0 with 150,000 miles on it with 355's that have 2000 miles on them

I think the weight is 80w 90 or somethng like that, but for how much you need... its around 2 quarts plus around 6oz of friction modifier. Same for the 5.0

More like 75W90..... [Smile]

Synthetics will help reduce rear axle temps....Synthetics also help with break-in...It helps the diff temps stay down due to any added fricton from the new gear set...

I ran the cheap stuff until about a 500miles, then I switched to synthetics.....

Mobil 1 makes 75w90, and Kragen carries it...I actually added Red-Line gear oil

Who's doin the install?...If rear-end-specialties is doing it, they will ask you if you want synthetics or not...

If your worried that much, just have synthetics added with the new gear set and after the break-in, change to synthetics again...

Yes, you will need the friction modifier additive...I also hope you buy or bought FMS 3.73's....Most other brands of gears are noisier and/or weaker....

I use the mobil one gear oil without any other additives.
