Why is there a little bit of fluid under the shifter when you take it off? also why do you need a bead of RTV when installing a shifter? Am I missing something or can some enlighten me? Thanks guys...

Because tranny fluid flows through that area.

Thats also normal. The tranny fluid gets warm, plus, if you dont have a lower shift boot, hot air from the motor will come up through the hole making the shifter hot.
