Just picked up my first stang, and made the biggest mistake of rushing the decision and getting an AOD, luckily it is built. I'm in fremont and am willing to drive around the bay, i just want one of you gurus out there to take a look and drive my car. There are a few problems(sounds, leaks, lol) that i'm not too sure about. And it would be a great help to know where my stang is right now(et/mph), i also need to get some better mpg (around 14 currently). I also want to find some one who does side jobs on stangs around here.....Im out and about in the bay all day, so if any of you gurus got some free time to take a look at it this week, give me a call (510)579-6425. Thanks alot -Shareef

Don't look down on the AOD's, especially if its been built. Do you have a high RPM stall converter in your AOD? If so, that would explain the fuel economy.

What are the common causes of the clunk that comes from the rear. It only happens when the car upshifts or down shifts without a decent amount of throttle. Actually the tranny is made by level ten but for some reason the previous owner took out the converter and replaced it with a stock one. The car used to be blown, it had knock, air/fuel, boost, oil temp gauges when i got it but they were not hooked up. The engine blew up on the previous owner and he dropped in a engine out of a 91 GT. Also i had a question about the axle housing, is there supposed to be any the looks like a valve( meatl cylinder with 1/8" of play up and down) on the right avle housing. Well there is on mine and it is leaking oil like crazy???

The valve is a breather for the axle tube. It's supposed to be there.

The clunk could be torn torque boxes. With the brief history that you gave of the car I am willing to bet that this is your problem. Mine did that. On mellow shifts with partial throttle it would clunk. Turned out that the torque boxes had torn. This is not uncommon with lots of power/sticky tires/aftermarket rear lower control arms.

They are located forward of the rear axle on either side where the lower control arms mount to the chassis. Take a look under there and you should be able to tell pretty quickly.

Sean.

Thanks Sean. I will check it out in the morning hopefully that is the problem. Is there a reason that the breather valve is spitting out so much oil? Also what kind of gains would i see after shortie headers, u/d pullies, and cold air all at once?

Around 20-25 RWHP.
