Ok so when I changed the head gaskets there was a ton of nasty red/brown crap in the coolent passages. I scraped some out and put everything back together. What happens is it turns my water brown after awhile and doesn't cool very well, but then I drain it put in fresh water and it works fine for awhile. how can I clean ALL that crap out of the system. is there any REALLY strong chemicals that could do it?? thanks Casey

My XR4's coolant system used to get quite dirty...

The best way I've found to clean the coolant passeges out is with a flush...You can buy a Prestone flush additive, but I've never used it...

I remove my T-stat(so it doenst close while trying to flush), and connect the water hose from my house to the upper radiator hose thats connected to the radiator...I then run a universal hose off my t-stat housing on to the driveway floor..(be careful if you have a lot of coolant in your engine already, the neighbors dont like that shit [Razz] )....I then start the car and let the water pump cycle the old water out and the new water in=flush...

If your not running enough coolant you will get a lot of corrosion in the engine...I always run 50water/50coolant and some Red Line Water Wetter...

I think my car has a lot of corrosion in it. I have been trying to flush it but it just never cleans it all out, the junk on the heads couldn't be totally scraped off with a screwdriver so I am wondering if there is a better flush I can get? Thanks Casey

So, have you ever REALLY flushed it?????..I assumed you havent.....It says in your first post that you just drained it and then refilled with fresh water.... [Confused]

When you flush your coolant system, you can also rev the engine higher to increase the water pump flow, to really push the sludge out...Some of the additives that they sell to clean the coolant system will just move the sludge to an area in the engine or radiator and cause a perminant blockadge...Thats why I only flush my coolant system...

I used the flush about a month ago but I will try it again, maybe It just needs it a few times

Try this go to a local ford dealer and buy a container of coolant flush used on the recall for the taurus( It is the brown coolant recall )This is some nasty shit but does a great job. Follow the direction and you will be happy with the out come If you can also pop out a freeze plug or two to get the heads cleaned even better.
