Yesterday it was about 93 degrees out here in Livermore and I went thru the McDonalds drive thru.
When I pulled out my car was almost pegged on the stock temp gauge. As I started driving it started to go down but never went below half way. My car usually runs at the second needle from the bottom.
Then today on my way to work this morning at about 7:30 a.m. it was reading a little bit above half way. It never reads this high so I don't know why all of a sudden it has been running so hot.
I have a GMS Two core radiator with an aluminum catch can with a stock thermostat and one of those shitty 18" flex-a-lite fans(When I do my 3g upgrade I will be getting the Black Magic Elec. Fan). I DONT HAVE MY OEM FAN SHROUND on there because it will not install with the new radiator. I dont think this is the problem because it wasnt running this hot last week with the shroud off so why would it start now?
So last night I flushed my coolant system and put in some coolant with a bottle of water wetter and filled the rest up with water but it's still running above midline and it's not even 80 degrees out.
I am stumped! Maybe my car needs to ditch the 157,kkk stock thermo for a 180

Have you checked the coolant?? also you might want to check, i know that most of the early 90's had a recall on their engine fans so if i were you i would check that out and make sure your fan is doing the job... keep us posted on what happens, im curious.

have you tried a new water pump, cooler thermostat, stock fan with shroud(you gotta have that shroud or your fan wont pull shit for air) better electric fan, black magic maybe, (i have one for sale 100$ and its yours, pm if interested) clogged radiator? from running mostly water, which runnin mostly water in my opinion is a FUCK NO. PM me man, i'll help you with a new cooling system.

Well my water pump has about 6,000 miles on it if that and I know that's not the problem. I am going to put a 180 degree thermo in there and see if that helps.
Check your pms also.

Yeah I am going to get a black magic electric fan but I dont think my car would be able to run it unless I did the 3g upgrade???
I'll install the 180 thermo tonight.

also try changing the radiator cap
Posted by 91sleeper (Member # 779) on
:
It's a new stant cap with the pressure release, sorry I forgot to mention that. I think it's a 17lb cap which is the reccomended pressure for the radiator I have.

Do you guys think I can run the black magic electric fan without the 3g upgrade? I only have pulleys on the water pump and crank.

yes. I have an electric fan, 3 core radiator and fms pullies on my crank and pump. the only time I see a problem is when I have the AC on, the car will die when coming to a stop,...henc the 3g upgrade would be ideal. If I don't use the AC then all is well with stereo, lights, pullies, fan, etc. Good luck

Did you swap the pulley on your alternator? Do you have a powerful stereo? If the answer to these questions is yes, then I wouldn't reccomend it with the stock alternator.

Mark,
I left the stock alternator pully on there, I only have the water pump and crank pullys on. And no I don't have a hard hitting stereo either.

okay smart guy,
then maybe your therm.is stuck open ..or closed for that matter.
if the thermostate is 157k miles old it seems to be a good start and idea to replace that and go from there...the fan shroud helps alittle
unless your gonna do the 3g swap..go for it.3g swap isn't so great with the stock alt. but it'll work.you pegged the temp gauge going to mc e dezz
..hope you didn't warp any thing
good luck

Ok I have the new 180 degree stat in there and went for a drive and it's running A LOT cooler. It's not going over the second line from the bottom on the stock gauge. But it's only 80-85 degrees out here in livermore right now so we'll see tommorow if it can withstand the 100 degree plus temps.

Livermore sucks... I think I'll change my stat too, what are they like $5?

There around $8 plus a one dollar gasket.
