Well on the way to work today I noticed when I turn my steering wheel from right to left I hear a creaking noise. The power steering pump is not making a winning or high pitched noise which is usually associated with this I would think. I checked the fluid in the power steering pump and it's really dark brown and smells burned. Do you guys think if I take the PS return hose off and cycle new fluid through the pump and rack this would resolve the problem? I have a new PUMP I can put in if that's going out, however I am wondering if the steering rack may also be bad. Please help guys! I am entering in the cafords.com car show and I am going to try like hell to get it all fixed tomorrow. If I do need to replace the rack does anyone know where I can get an OEM one around town for a good price?

What year car is it?....Are you sure its not polyurethane bushings or the serpentine belt slipping?...Noises are hard to figure out over the internet...

I would definately flush the PS fliud if its burnt or brown...It wont hurt and it will prolong the life of your pump and rack...

If you figure out that it is the rack, I know Pep Boys sell Fox body racks and carry them in stock...

Good luck and maybe you could be more specific for more help..(year, engine, noise and town).

Sorry for the vagueness. It's a 1994 Ford Mustang with the 5.0L v8. The noise is like a low squeaky kinding binding like noise from what I remember. I went to go try turning the steering wheel back and forth just now and it's not making the noise. Think it was cause of the hot weather and the burned fluid not lubricating the rack well cause it would have been thinner?

Maybe it was the heat, but make sure your using "Type F" automatic trans fliud in the power steering...

If a guy name "ST5150" comes on and tells you to use 10w30 motor oil in your power steering ignore him....lol... [Wink] [Big Grin]

Very odd. Is the only problem the noise, or is it harder to turn the wheel? Try taking the belt off and turning the wheel to help isolate the problem.

It was a little harder to turn the wheel but not overly. I am going to take the belt off Tommorrow and try turning the pulley. The very least I am going to change the fluid in the PS pump since it's burned.

make any progress? Even if your pump goes, you can drive it around. It'll just be VERY hard to steer.

I got it all done! Put a new belt on to boot! It's off to the carshow it goes!.
