I might be getting a DSS 306 shortblock, and was wondering would 185's be too big for the shortblock?

you're planning on going forced induction later right? if so then i would get the 185's.....that's what i have. the motor felt great before i put the blower belt on...even better after i put the belt on!!! [Big Grin] [burnout]

What they said.

I only recomend the 165's with stock pistons....or aftermarket pistons that aren't cut for 2.02 valves.
Simply because of the more favorable intake to exhaust ratio on the 185's.

I've seen some combos dyno with AFR 165's that later switched to notched pistons and 185's on a stock shortblock that made more power with the 165's.

but generally speaking, the 185's are a great bet.
