as the title states
this is on a solid flat tappet lifter block, 351w, unknown year as of right now

wondering how much it will cost, where can it be done, and how much of the engine do i have to dissasemble, the whole thing or just to a short or longblock

since i also have to buy lifters, would it be cheaper to just by linkbar lifters

Lucky for you, it's an early 90's block.
It already has the added material in the lifter galley for the spider hold-down bolts. All you have to do is carefully drill & tap the holes...then install the spider & roller lifters, check/double check everything & get the proper length pushrods.

should i dissasemble the block down to nothin so i can have it cleaned thouroughly to make sure all metal shavings are out or just clean all the shavings i can see and change the oil frequently

and when i am done, do u want to degree my cam [Big Grin]

Oh, I'll degree your cam. You can count on that! [Big Grin]

Truth is it's a bit dangerous to drill & tap with the shortblock assembled. Jim & I talked about it...& I really didn't want to do it. The link-bar lifters are $400. & are a little taller....or at least they are for the 302's....don't know if they're the same ones for the 351.

Anyway, the plan was to get a good shopvac & drill slowly with a well oiled bit. Then flush as much crap out as possible with a few qts of fresh oil.

Heavy white grease on bits and slow bit speed.

Hey if u get the Mustangs PLus catalog it shows u how to do it u will also have to grind the block so u can use those little C lock things

grining block, errrr [Mad]
the link bars are looking better

maybe this will be a future project

can i run some 1.72 roller rockers to get more lift and not change the cam, will i encounter problems if i do that since it is a flat tappent bastard

since it is a 351w why dont you go with a solid roller cam with the crower solid roller lifters. The only mod you will have to do is change the valve springs since the crower lifters have link bars aka no drilling and at least 20 more hp. Just my .02

dont u have to adjust the valves more with solid lifters, i could be way off but if u do, i am lazy and would hate to have to always be adjustin my valves
drink beer, sleep, and race cars, oh ya girls [Big Grin]

No grinding. It is '90 block ready for rollers except for the lack of holes in the bosses. Have to also find a spider to fit the wider 351.

so jim, do u know how much lifters and spyders will cost, i have some used 5.0 lifters but they have like 110k on them, i really dont think those should be reused

also jim, do u know the compression of that motor

No idea on cost, just call the dealership. Compression should be 9.3:1 or so.

i was just using the fordmuscle compression calc and it seemed to be higher, is the piston below deck alot or what, huge valve relief, just curious, and how big are the combustion chambers on the heads, sorry for all the questions, i just have been brain storming

Posted by FasterDamnit (Member # 442) on :

64cc chambers.
stock bore.

Posted by 66 AC COBRA (Member # 904) on :

when i plug it into the calc i get 10.09-1

i am using 4in bore
3in stroke
64cc chambers
-7 for the valve reliefs
.040 for the gasket compression

is there anything i am missing

Yeah, I didn't build it am just reporting what I was told. JohnB put it together.

i guess i will pm john b, thanks for ur help

Posted by FasterDamnit (Member # 442) on :

1. It is a 351, not a 302 so the stroke is wrong.
2. When entering the cc's of the piston eyebrows, use -4.

edit-
using the bigger stroke I get 10.09, too. Not sure about the valve reliefs or piston to deck heaight.

oops, yeah, i was using 3.5 in my calcs, that was just a typo, and with the 3.5 stroke and 4cc valve reliefs
it come out to 10.45:1
so its even higher, i have a pm into john b so it will be cleared up soon, i am guessing the piston is below deck a bit to drop te compression, or it could be a 10:1 motor, eitehr way it will be mine uuahahaha [Big Grin]

Early Lightnings were 8.8:1 from the factory and that is what he was trying to copy-

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/2745/specs.html

Probably dished pistons. Which work well w/ boost.

so what do u think this motor will put out in its current form
