I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT, 5.0L V8, ALL WHEEL DRIVe, 100,400 miles.

The "check engine" light recently came on. I bought an OBD II scanner to determine what is causing the problem and it gave me a P401 code. I consulted the Chilton service manual for the car and it said it has something to do with the exhaust emission. Help!

I live in the southbay - san jose and looking for a mechanic to check this problem out. I don't want some mechanic to rip me off since I am a female I have had experience with this. Please send information on a credible mechanic in the south bay that will be able to help me resolve this problem.

Thanks - I appreciate any help.

I'm guessing IAB needs to be cleaned or the EGR valve is sticking (needs to be cleaned as well) pretty typical 60k mileage items...

Can you give us exactly what chilton's says the error is?

Code P0401...Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)Insufficient Flow Detected

Need to disconnect the EGR solenoid and make sure it is getting at least 10" vacuum @ idle
Check the hoses from the solenoid to the valve for cracks, kinks, blockage, etc....
Apply vacuum to EGR valve @ idle and make sure the idle speed drops at least 100rpm
The list goes on and on

I am a mechanic but I am in the North Bay

Good Luck
Brian
