well gone are the days of illegal smog (unless your uncle works for the main dmv office in sacramento heh heh)

the new smog stations will be a dyno. you will go on there and will test under load. now thing is that they changed the passing standards and they even said in the class all these ford taures with blown head gaskets that they had to mill down wont pass because of the upped compression the new system is very strict.

now this sounds like bs but the exhaust changed in anyway even muffler may make the car not pass. now heres the killer. the ca smog people are going to start to go after companys selling 50 state legal items after june of this year for saying legal in all 50 state if they did not test on the new ca smog. so pretty much the carb numbers are gonna be junk and also you cant put another car on the dyno cause there are certain numbers that they put in that have to match.

hopefully i heard this the wrong way but man i feel sorry for people that need to get illegal smogs now.

Two things I noticed you said NEW smog stations will have the dynos what about the old places that do not have dynos, sounds like a loop hole? Now that there will be a lot more dynos around will this mean its going to drive down the cost of getting your car dynoed? [dance] Where there is a will there is a way or a crook or 2 [Big Grin] Guess I will find out come aug. when I have to get my car smogged.

so wait im in the middle of building my car back up is all this carb number stuff useless ?? is it just gonna get booted anyways?? might as well go all out then i guess

No, they will not work as regular dyno's. They will replace the current system, the old ones will be of no use at all. These machines are VERY expensive so many smog shops will close down (most common gas stations will not have a smog machine anymore since the new machines take up 1 full bay). Smoging will cost about $100-$140 from what I heard. Why dont you just get smogged before the new machines come out? The smog papers are good for 2 or 6 months (cant remember which, but 100% positive atleast 2 mos.)

Testing on the new equipment begins July 1, 2003. But, actual dynamometer is being phased in over several months. What this means, I don't know, but I think you will be told what kind of smog check you'll need when you get your registration papers. Smog checks are valid for 90 days so anyone with registration due jul-sep should get a smog check on June 31st!!

CARB E.O. numbers are not effected by the new smog check. SoCA and Sac and all sorts of counties have been doing smog check II for a long time now so that doesn't change.

If you didn't have problems passing the old smog, I doubt you will have problems with the new testing. I don't know about anyone else, but it was the idle test that gave me the most headaches. A lot of people had to mess with their timing and use all sorts of other tricks to pass the idle test.

I've thought about this several times, like renting a Mailboxes Etc. box in a non-smog county, but never had the balls to do it.

AWD vehicles are exempt from the treadmill test. If the two front or rear wheels can be disengaged on a four wheel drive vehicle, they are subject to the treadmill test.

I had an idea last night, although I don't know if it would work or not but here goes: Say for example you've got a red 93 lx coupe with a slew of engine and exhaust mods that would undoubtably fail a smog check. What if you bought yourself a cheap red 93 lx coupe with a 4 cyl engine, got the smog on that thing, and then take the licence plate and reg sticker from the 4 banger and stick it on your 5.0? Maybe even take the VIN plaque off the dash on the 4 cyl and put it on the 5.0. I realize there is a huge risk involved if you get busted, maybe even a felony but it's just a thought...?
