I got a safety pin of all things stuck in my side wall. It is about an inch from the edge of the tire where the tread starts. I heard you can't use a plug on the side wall? Any truth to this? Anyone repair a flat on the side wall?

Hey i don't know about a plug on a sidewall but a tire shop more than likely can patch for a fair price.

I patched it already with a plug, but heard its not a good idea.

America's tire will install those good plugs that go from the inside of the tire for free, regardless of who you bought your tires from [patriot] I never pay for fixing flats, I either fix it myself or take it to America's tire and have it fixed for free.

JMHO~ Get a new tire unless you only plan on driving 5-10mph sso that way when it blows you will only get minimal damage! Side walls are nothing to play with. As far as americas tire they told you them would patch your side wall?? Or are you refering to normal patches? On my 4x4 I run $300. tires a pop and I have had small holes in side walls before and they just replace the tire and say it can not be patched on a side wall.

I had a hole still on the tread but near the sidewall and they still told me they wouldn't plug it because it wouldn't be safe.

Yeah I heard that if you have any damage to the side walls, they are pretty much useless tires, replace them before something serious happens like a blow out on the freeway.

First of all, plugs and patches are 2 different things....

Whenever you use a plug you have to stab your tire with a plug tool.(looks like a T-handle screwdriver).By doing that you can brake and damage the threads of metal that hold and form the tire..This is very dangerous when doing it on a side wall due to the fact that this is were most of the pressure is on a tire when you are cornering or have a heavy load..

I would recommend patches only....They are just like a bicycle tire patch, that way you dont have to stab the tire to make a hole big enough for a plug..

I doubt that a safty pin actually did any damage to your tire...You should be OK with just a tire patch..

Rob- I already pluged the tire just so I could drive it home, you think removing it and patching it is a good idea?

They dont patch sidewalls because of the pressure involved on the sidewall being greater than that of the tread. It will rip, its just a matter of when. But hey, buying a new rim and fixing body damage is probably much cheaper than getting a new tire on the car.
