Thinking of getting headers soon for my 98 snake. I'm leaning towards Ford Racing headers, but want a second opinion. Right now i'm running Bassani's. Would I need to change them to h-pipes if I want to run long tubes instead.

I don't think I understand your question, but shorty headers require a 'standard' H-pipe, and longtubes require a "shorty" H-pipe.

Since just about any header install on a Modular Cobra is going to be a pain in the ass, you might as well make it worth your while and go with the Long tube headers, because your Cobra will get a bigger power gain than shorty headers. I installed The Hooker long tubes and X-pipe and nothing else on my 01 Cobra and the car can now get sideways shifting into 3rd gear. I can't remember the car doing that when it was stock. The only thing I hate about my Hookers is the shitty ass leak prone slip fit that connects the headers and x pipe. As soon as I get a chance, I'll weld in 3 bolt flages. BBk long tubes have bolt on flanges, but if you ever have to drop the tranny, you will have to pull the driver side bbk header The new Kooks Griggs headers look cool, but they cost a shit load.

I have BBK Long tube headers on my 98 cobra with the off road H and I gained somewhere between 17-22 rear wheel hp but be sure to get the MIL eliminators. Go with BBK great products especially the ceramic coated headers, they look good.

are long tubes smog legal?

you might have ground clearance issues if you install long tube headers. especially since you have lowering springs. check it out before you buy.

Ceramic coating will be your best friend bro I promise.

As far as shorty headers go, FMS ceramic coated shorties are the absolute best for fit and reliability. Plus, their flat flange allows the use of good Bassani gaskets.
For long tubes, I recommend BBK. Their quality has come a long way, and they fit well. (They're also compatible with the Bassani gaskets.) I agree about ceramic coating--it's your friend!
We also carry the best header bolts and SureLok washers that _will not_ back out or come apart(unlike Stage 8s).
If you have any more questions, let me know!
