how much can a 96gt auto tranny handle? im want to get pi heads, but people are telling me it might kill the tranny. anyone know how many hp a stock tranny can take?

It's not so much the power it can take, but more like the way you use (abuse?) your AOD-E.
If you like to drag race alot, you will overheat your tranny often due to the tight converter.
You should be OK with the PI swap, but it's STRONGLY reccomended to run an auxiliary cooler.
For performance street, get a shift kit. For any serious attempt at drag racing, I would get a converter. MUCH better performance & easier on the Tranny.

Once you get up above 300 to the rear wheels it is strongly recommended to at least run a 2500 stall converter. A bigger tranny cooler is always a great idea cause it's only $50 and it will double the life of your tranny. I highly recommend getting the transgo shift kit too. You'll be chirpin gears just as fast as any manual out there. With this set up you should be able to handle any street strip set up your engine can produce.

if you replace the converter get a hardened input shaft while you at it to help strenghten the tranny
