I tried everything else, prybars and what not. I can't get the pressed-fit parts off my T5 mainshaft, so I'm buying a press. I found one at Harbor Freight for $109:

Does that look like it's what I need? I think I also need bearing separator plates. Does anybody know where I can get tools like this in the San Jose area without having to mail order them? if not, does anybody have any other recommendations for a cheap shop press that will probably only be used a few times (I still think it's better than relying on a auto shop to do the work for me).

thanks

I would call a tranny shop or stop by and ask what tools are needed.

It might be easier to buy a used off the board?

You need a gear puller!!....You can buy a two or three jawed gear puller from any parts store..A press will work too, but its more expensive.....On the main shaft with the 5th gear free, the rear bearing, first speed gear and related synchronizer can be removed by hand...A bare shaft will be left with only one hub on it...DO NOT attempt to press this sole hub off, as it has an extreme interference fit!!

Let me know how your T5 rebuild goes.. I'm rebuilding mine in the next few weeks..Guess what?..I blew 3rd gear!!..
I know how you feel about the other people doing the work....Ive taken my trany out three times and given it to a "certain guy" in Santa Clara, who everyone refered me to,(supposed to be the best) only to have my trans brake again and again...The T5 is the only thing I havent rebuilt myself, now I'm gonna learn..

-What rebuild kit did you go with???

If you could, PM me and let me know...
