So my question is what causes this. Do I need a new heater core? If so will a 91 LX heater core work for me in a 89 LX. Thanks

Sounds like your heater core is cracked. My sister's car was just doing the exact same thing. Does it smell like coolant in your car when running the heater?

As for using an '91 in a '89, look in something like Texas Mustang parts and check part #s, but they should probably work.

use cold defrost to defrost your windows.

Andy is right if you use hot defrost then they will fog and then eventually clear if you dont mind waiting.

I have an 89 LX and it does the same. It's a bad heater core. I have just never got around to getting a new one put in

Yeah it smells like crap (coolant!) when turn on. Ive been useing cold air since the hot air isn't working right, but I want to be able to use both when I want, know what I mean. picky i guess
thanks for the suggestions. so if is smells like coolant that the heater core, right. I'll see what I can find with the part nubmers.

sounds like you have a bad heater core. been there, done that. a word of warning, if you plan on doint it yourself, plan on a whole day. the dash +some needs to be remove to swap it out, not fun [Mad]
