My buddy was driving his moms 96 dodge intrepid and he dropped it into low gear and got it up to like 51/2 on the rpms. A few days later her motor is knocking BADLY. it was about a qaurter and a half low on oil. Would taking it to 6 like that be enough to fry it? the readline on her tach doesnt start untill 7...so wouldnt that mean that the car should be able to handle 6k? Also is it possible for the people at dodge to hook up to her computer and see that it reached 6k rpms?

Is it a 3.3L motor? If so, the knocking noise you hear may be the torque converter bolts.
I have had 2 of those cars in my shop in the past month with a noise the sounded like a rod knock. Both had loose torque converter bolts
As far as the computer telling on him for being stupid, the only time the computer records things like rpm, engine temp etc.... is when there is a code stored in the computer and then the "freeze frame" would only record the instant the code set

Good Luck
Brian
