What do you think about engine break in periods?
If so, how many miles do you consider it "good"?

I've heard many different opinions on this, What do you think though?

I have heared 1000 miles but take it all the way through the rpm ranges and not to keep it at one speed or under a certain speed.

Go to 6,500 the first time you start it, to make sure everything is ok [Big Grin]

I would wait at least until 1,000 miles, shid\fting no higher the 3,500.

Run regular oil for teh first few thousand, then switch to synthetic

This is Dss's break in procedure - The first time you start the engine hold it at about 2000-2500 for about 20 minutes, then change the oil to get rid of any metal shavings. Be easy on the engine, no higher than 3500, for 3000 miles then you can decide if you want put synthetic in it or not - they did not recomend the snythetic but I put it in anyway.

we have a rule with my friends after we build a motor.

-Fire it up, take one turn, floor it, then repeat until the smile leaves your face.

Yeah you have to actually break in a flat tappet cam but who still uses those anyway? You have to break in the piston rings but there are a million different theories on that, the best one i've heard is just drive it like you would normally.

Start it up and let run for 20 minutes or so and set the timing, check for leaks ect... Then change the oil/filter and go race it!
