my little brother just picked up a '66 stang 6-popper with a 7.5 rear and drums all around.
of course our first idea is to put some kind of 8 in it, and I don't want to deal with the hassle (and expense) of finding a wiring harness, computer, sensors, yadda yadda.
I'm going to ring, bearing, and add a standard oil pump with a hardened shaft to my oil oil-burning 302 (former RIP) and that should fix it up.
Handing down my iron GT-40 heads, I can donate a H20 pump, the cobra cam and rockers and lifters (though I'll probably swap the cam, unfortunately the 1.7 rollers limit off the shelf options)I pretty much have the entire front dress except for an alternator and the '66 is a factory manual steering car
But basically I was wondering what else needs to be changed? Of course we need an intake, probably one of those edelbrock air-gappers, and maybe a holley 650 carb (?), but forgive my ignorance, is the 6-banger '66 stang compatible with the holley carb or where does the throttle cable mount?
my bro is pretty familiar with carb tuning, fortunately.
Don't know what else to ask? Any roadblocks in my way? Unforunately I don't have any old T5's lying around so I have to find another.
Hopefully with the right cam selection this little 2600 (or so) # car will be a runner. It's light as hell I'm so surprised. Course the weight will come up a bit with an 8, but not that much. Lighter than my car anyways.

You have a big task ahead of you. Converting a older straight 6 to a V8 is much easier than a Fox 4cyl to 8, but nevertheless the entire drivetrain needs to be re-done.
The 7.5" rear on the six will not hold up to a V8... you need to get an 8" rearend/housing/axle/brake assembly (or 9"...but thats overkill, and hard to find these days.)
You'll also need a V8 driveshaft for these cars...not hard to fine.
You'll need a V8 tranny of somesort...assuming your bro's car is a C4, you'll need a V8 C4.
Moving to the front end... the 6's are 4lug cars i believe... you'll need V8 front spindles, brakes, tie rods.
In terms of the motor, it'll bolt right in using V8 65-65 mounts... pedal/throttle linkage is the same. you'll of course need exhaust work. Wiring is basic on these cars...less than half-dozen wires to the motor.

So much work for you. Stick with a 8 inch housing for the rear. If you have the money to change alot of things then start off with a 5.0 block and build a stroker. If not, just use a 289. They are really easy to find and I may have one for sale in the near future. The T-5 will be a bit of work but would allow you to run 4.11s. If you dont want to spend close to 2 gs on getting a working t-5 and the convesion parts, find a t-10 toploader (if you plan on making some power) or a sideloder. Youll have to change to 5 lug, a pain, but putsome new suspension while your under there. You have hella work to do but if you need help then post your questions.

As 67stang said it is a big job, doing the 5 lug conversion is a bit more manditory on the 65-66's than it is on a fox body. The only other item that I would add is that the fuel line needs to be run to the front of the shock tower for the V-8, the 6 fuel line pops up behind the shock tower. There is a nice Mustang salvage place in San Jose called Only Mustangs(not to be confused with Mustangs Only in Oakland) ABC Mustang in Hayward (886-TANG) is also a really good place for parts. Of course you might get lucky and find a V-8 Mustang in one of the self service junkyards. As for carb manifolds I like the Weiand(Holley) Stealth(high rise, 0-6800rpm range) over the Air Gap. I helped a friend do this about 2 years ago. Got the front end parts (spindles, disks, calipers, hoses from a Granada/Versilles/Monarch. Poped the ball joints and bolted everything up. Not bad at all.
We used a 9" from the same car. If you're lucky, you might find one with disks. Had to enlarge the u-boat holes in the shock mounting plates. Another friend did the upper shock work since the Granada has staggard shocks.
We also grabbed a spring kit to lower the car and relocated the upper control arms.
The wrecking yard stuff probably ran about $200 to get (pick & pull). Also we used the master cylinder from the Granada.
As for the engine. Change the oil pan and drill out the boss for the dip stick in the timing chain cover or use an earlier cover. If you use the later cover, you'll need an electric fuel pump. We used an alternator with the external regulator, water pump from the 5.0. Distributor was electronic, but I don't remember which one though it needs the later drive gear. The fuel line will work, though the V8 line would be better. In our case, the T-5 bolted in with the use of a new cross member and a newer bell housing. You'll also have your choice of adapting the existing wiring or getting the V-8 one.
The most difficult part was getting the clutch linkage worked out. There is no hole for the pivot in the block. You'll need to get an aftermarket one and z-bar, adapt a cable, or go hydrolic. We welded the factory shift handle to a factory handle. Add a set of tri-y's, full exhaust, GT tips and a valance and your'e there.
One last thing, one of the radiator hoses is on a different side. I think it was the upper.
All that said, the injection would not be that bad. Wiring the computer only takes 7 hots and a couple of grounds. Other than that, you just need to work out the fuel pump.
