im sure there is a good reason for it being there but what i want to know is being that it is a big airflow restriction has anyone ever cut it out?

a lot of people cut it out. Some people call it "gutting" your maf. Some people think gutting yout maf is actually boring it out, some think it is just taking the screen out.
It gets you a little better air flow, but of course nothing spectacular!

well, if you keep the screen in, you can take off your airfilter at the track for the "ram-air effect" but if you do take out the screen then it is not advised

Take it out and leave your air filter in at the track!

The screen smoothens the air flow allowing the meter to make more accurate measurements. Don't mess with it. The meter was also calibrated taking into consideration the amount of hair the posts "restricts". If you cut out the post, more air will get into the motor than the meter knows about, causing a lean condition. In short, the MAF is the most important sensor on your car... don't mess with it
