I would a appreciate it if someone could thoroughly explain to me how to advance the timing on my 91 5.0 lx hatch. Form 10 degrees to about 14 degrees. Thank you.

going to need a timing light, and 1/2 wrench. Do you know how to check timing at all?

Okay you need what he said.

1st Disconnect the SPOUT connector. It is located near the distributor. Its a little 2 pin connector.

2nd Hook up the timing light. Positive Negative.....Hook the Timing Sensor to Spark Plug Wire #1

3rd Turn the car on

4 Check timing on the Balancer near the crankshaft pully.

5 loosent the 1/2 inch nut on the distributor

6 turn it either left or right until the timing mark points to 14

7 Tighten nut back up

8 Check timing

9 Turn motor off

10 Disconnect timing light

11 reconnect SPOUT Connector

12 drive around and be happy

Mike

Be carefull. Alot of 5.0 dont like that much timing and will pre-detinate (i think i spelled that wrong). My car would only go up to 12* timing. Anything after that would detinate. Good luck. [patriot]

I have never heard of a car (86-93 without blower, nos, or major mods) that cannot handle at least 14 degrees of timing. If you can't, you might want to do a thourough tune up and run the proper gas.

My car would only take 12* timing WITH 91octane. Well... That was my stock block. I havent tried 14* on my new motor. I'm staying at 10* because of the chip. [Big Grin]

Another member of the 12 degree club here. At the track I would actually lose .5 mph if I pumped it up to 13-14 degrees. I think 13-14 is more suited for that good TEXAS gasoline, not this hippie California junk [patriot]

sup . a fiveohmike is on the dot but i think u should first mark ur stock timing of 10 degrees btdc with some whiteout to be safe. then mark the balancer at 12 or 14 btdc. its eaiser becauses it can be hard to see the marks at times.good luck

Where you from? I got a gun if you want to do it... I have mine at 12*, my car didn't like 14 too much.

Stock intake/heads/cam went 13.39 at 102 w/ 16* timing.

whoa there, what's the catch? this sounds too easy. why doesnt' everyone just run a fugged up timing and have fast ass cars? it's gotta mess something up to have the engine running so hot... no?

More timing doesn't mean more power. Your timing has to match your compression ratio, octane, power adder, ect.

I've also seen many people mis-read their timing. Each tick on the stock balancer is TWO degrees of timing. Many people set their timing on the third or fourth tick after ten degrees BTDC and think they're at 13 or 14 degrees initial when its really 16 or 18 degrees [Eek!]

Its also worth nothing that some EEC problems (codes) will withdraw timing and thus allow you to get away with an 'abnormal' amount of initial timing.

Lets not forget the stock balancer could have spun, the reference pointer could be bent and good 'ol user error reading the balancer which all could explain differences between how much initial timing a stock 5.O can take.

Glenn - What would be good for my car? Would it be worth going to 12 or 14 degrees opposed to stock? Right now I run 89 octane, but I wouldn't mind going higher if i'm going to feel a noticeable difference. I also don't know how to do timing.

Properly measured, good balancer and pointer. No codes. At 18* she would ping, at 14* she ran slower. So, more timing gave me more power up to a point. Every car is a little different- that's what tuning is all about. Use all this info to get you into the right ballpark and then tune your car to what it wants. I can't afford dyno time so I tune at the track.

Oh yeah, - that's on 91 octane.

i've had it at 15 degrees and it felt really strong..(91octane)
now since i've ported my lower intake i've bumped it up to 18 degrees.with 91+ octane booster(108 turbo)..doesn't ping or feel like shit.
its a lot stronger than before..
the tires rip in 1st,2nd, and cherps in 3rd.
those are 3:08 gears mind you [Razz]
i don't know maybe i got a magic 5.0 [Roll Eyes]
but everyones 5.0 is differnt in there own way.
spark gap,fuel,compession..whatever you know what i'm saying..i think 15 degrees is cool for mild mods on a 5.0.
