Which is better and which car did these come out of? Also will the 4.10's fit into a 88 gt mustang?

if you 1/4 mi race a lot 4.10's are better. If you want to run on the freeway or commute 3.73's i had 4.10's before and they are terrible on the freeway my car would rev to 2900 goin about 70 i ran 13.8 at the track with them i like to mash the peddle on the freeway so i switched to 3.73's im absolutely impressed with them car doesn't rev that high on freeway like 2400 at 70 and tires still melt the pavement on the street car felt more powerfull 3.73 [worship]

sounds good thanks for the info... what were your times like with the 3.73 gears do you know for the 1/4 mile?

here is the gear ratio scale for DOHC cobra's but you'll get the drift.

if your gonna drive your car every day id go with 3.55's. they are the best all around gears for a 5.0. anyways the 2 tenths or so you lose between 3.55's and 3.73's you can make up by getting a light front drag sway bar from steeda, some good drag springs, and some good control arms int he rear. That will take more than 3 tenths off your time. That way youll save money on gas too.

good info man. Anyways I need to start saving on gas, it's a pain in the ass. How much do 3.55's usually cost and where can I pick some up do you know? And how about 3.73's? Which vehicles do these come off of?

contrary to what's posted here, in 5th on the freeway at 70 mph with a 245/60-15 tire with 3.73s would be ~2250 rpms (depending on inclination, wind speed, etc.)

Same tire, same speed with 4.10s would be ~2450 rpms.

So if you are 1/2 way serious about racing your car, the 200 rpms should not bother you on the freeway. Impact on mileage should be negligible, especially with city driving.

Now if your trap speeds are too high for your power-adder application or something (115+ traps), then 4.10 gears *might* be too much for you , depending on how high your motor can rev and what tire size you can run.

I'd say 4.10s until you're well into the 11's would be a good general rule. [Eek!]

115 mph is 6000 rpms in 4th gear with a standard T5 and 4.10s out back. That's enough mph for 11's and a stock shortblock 302 with the right heads/cam/intake and valvetrain package can rev towards 7k with the factory rev limit bypassed.

I don't have a technical response for you, but I look at it this way:
Whenever someone (me!) gets a "mild" version of a mod, you almost always regret not going all the way. Gears are cheap, gear INSTALLS are expensive!Do this right the 1st time. I would go with at least a 3.73 ratio. I started with that on my AOD & loved the gear for 4+ years.
I just switched to 4.10's, gained 2 1/10's (13.3 best to 13.0) but have sum traction issues now.
Live life, man. Have fun with your car & get a real gear. Then do that traction stuff discussed earlier and be even FASTER!

if you want more info on what ears to buy read the new 5.0 mustang magazine in this months issue they talk about that. They recomend 3.55's for a 5.0 and 3.73 for a 4.6 motor. As far as price 3.55's and 3.73's are almost the same price. But i think 3.55's cant be too bad if the new cobra run's 12 second 1/4 mile times with 3.55's and a blower.

yeah, our stock 5.0s have so much in common with that high revving modular 4.6 that puts down 370 rwhp stock. Good comparison. [worship]

sorry i didnt mean that. i just meant that if the cobra can run 12's with 3.55 gears that his car with all the future mods that he listed that he wanted to do his car should be able to do the same. my bad

thanks

If you have an auto then you should at least do 3:73's but if you have a t-5 you should go with 3:55's.

i ran 13.8 with the 4.10's and 13.9 with the 3.73's so i only lost a tenth but both times i ran on stock tires i guess to realize the full potential of gears is to get tires and susp work

get at least 3:73, i got 4:10 in mine. my bro has 3:73 and when i drive his car it feels like it has stock gears, to me. the only problem i have with the 4:10 is my trap speed is at 115 mph with a stock cam and im running out of rpm in the 1/4 with a stock t5 in 4th gear. if i get a bigger cam this should help me. no if you have an auto (your lame) [Smile] ummm....anyway..if you have a 5 speed get 4:10's i have them in my 5.0 and its worth driving the speed limit to have those gears in for racing...gas milege isnt even bad its only bad if you speed...some of you peeps need to get educated

Sorry I only stick with manuals, mine is a 5speed.

im thinking of getting 4.10's the 3.73's arent cutting it anymore. just worried about when the blower goes on. [patriot]

Another thing with gears you have to think about is..........Power and Traction.......most cars will blow the tires off with 4:10's and street tires......unless you got some real good suspension.....even 3:73's.

My best time before the blower was 14.4 at 95MPH on street tires with a 2.09 60' Time and 3:73's......Now with the blower and street tires my best time was 14.2 at 104MPH with a 2.39 60' time ........I just cant hook at all in first and second....even granny shifting........

so is it ok to put 4.10's in a mustang i drive daily that has an AOD tranny or is that too low since i only got basically 3 gears if i race, or should i use 3.73. what will rpms be like in overdrive if i have 225/55/16 tires. I have 3.73's in my svo with 245/45/16 tires and in 5th gear at 70mph im at 3000 rpm, what might my 5.0 be at, at 70mph in 4th
thanks
