Aaron, let me blab in your ear for a second.
Guy locally I built a 331 for doesnt want to take the time to wait for a custom cam and him and I figure we can put one in later ( to make sure the hp you are seeing is from the cam and not the very nice AFR heads) to see the difference.
Long story short Im thinking about running 1.72s on the intake and 1.6s on the exhaust.
This will only effect lift but some debate that it will effect duration as well (not sure of the science of the whole deal but Buddy Rawls says that it will effect duration also) and wont change the LC or anything but here is what Im hoping.
No, better yet here is what Im doing.
Im going to run the car the same day with 1.72s on the intake and 1.6s on the exhaust both on and off the bottle, then Im going to run the motor with 1.72s on the exhaust and 1.6s on the intake both on and off the bottle.
I want to see the difference.
Then the next step is to order up the custom cam and try it both on and off the bottle to see the results.
Im going to theorize that on motor the custom cam makes more power and the 1.7s on the intake make more power when using the TFS cam.
Im going to theorize that on bottle the 1.6s on the intake and the 1.72s on the exhaust using the TFS cam run harder on the bottle than even the custom cam.
I would use the dyno to figure this all out but that would be costly and the guy wants to get the car dyno tuned after he has the ideal cam and nitrous combo.
Whattdya say?

Well Buddy Rawls has A LOT more knowledge about motors than I do. IMO it's really going to depend on what he wants. Max NA performance or Max bottle performance. Now what TFS cam does he have? I'll look up the intake centerline he suggested for the #1 cam. I do know he recommended 1.7 rockers on the intake with it. I believe it was a 114 to a 116 ICL. How much advance is built into that cam? What intake are you using? Honestly, try degreeing the cam into the ICL he suggests and see how it does (I'll look up the exact ICL). He's told guys on the corral to do it and nobody does it, LOL. He said there's 15-20 RWHP sitting on the table with that cam!!! Overall I'd say I'd agree with your theories except I think that the custom will produce the same power as the TFS with 1.7's on the exhaust. Just my prediction. Sounds interesting though. I'm waiting for a few more guys to post up their results with his cam's. A local from Roseville also bought a cam from Brian for his 331 (Mike's cam but a 112 LSA) using AFR 185's, and a cleaned up RPM Performer. Brian told him he should run a couple ticks behind Mike so about 118 mph ish. Another guy from San Jose has talked with him about a cam to make 350+/350+ out of his 306. Not sure if he got it yet or not (another 185/RPM combo). I'm waiting for the guy with a 331 TFS box stock heads, RPM intake, and my cam but on a 113 LSA to get up and running. Brian told him 355-360/355-360. That combo should run like stock with the 331. Should hear from him anyday now. Anyway I got my own issues to work out. Have a miss and can't figure out what the deal is.

Aaron,
Sorry to hear about the miss. Dude has the TFS stage 2 cam right now. Talk to Brian and see what ICL he thinks the cam should be installed on for me if you can?

I'll talk to him tomorrow. What heads and intake are you using and what's the compression? I'll ask him his prediction on power and his prediction with a custom of roughly the same size at .050.
I got a question for you about the miss. It just runs rough and you can tell one clyinder isn't firing right. The #3. I pulled the plug and it was black and sooty lookin but dry. Brian thinks it's a fuel issue. The cylinder is getting compression but I haven't verified how much yet. Also it's getting spark cause I ran the car with the plug out. I checked the 10 pins (looks fine). Pushed them tightly together etc. checked codes and get 41/91 lean codes. Either I'm having some sort of ignition issue or the injector is not firing right or leaky. Do you have any ideas as to what it could be or what else to check?
Posted by PunkINa5.SLOW (Member # 10) on
:
Id run a full blown leak down on it. Do the rockers seem maybe too tight or loose on that cylinder? Check and double check and check again.
What kind of vacuum at idle you pulling?
Check the ohms on that plug wire.
Im sure you have done all the other basic troubleshooting so Iam hittin on often over looked items.
The 331 is a 10.7 to one AFR 185 headed
TFS Track heat intake and 1 3/4 longtubes.

I check all the other stuff. I did borrow some extra plug wires. I was suspecting the rockers possibly. Byron said they sounded on the loose side
Combo sounds Awesome. I'll let you know what he says.

Aaron,
One thing that I have found at work is the 2 main causes of codes 41 AND 91 together is either a loose O2 sensor ground wire or fuel pressure. The O2 sensor ground wire is originally located on the back of driverside cylinder head. It will cause the O2 voltage to read low and the computer will add fuel to compensate. If it (the computer) doesn't see the voltage rise, it will trip the code
Good luck
Brian

Cool, glad to see you're going with Brian. He's very good at what he does and recommends. What do your cam specs look like? Just curious what I'll need in order to step it up some. I'll be moving to an RPM upper very soon as my first mod. The intake just had the casting flash removed. It's just very smooth. I had the upper and lower done. A guy from the same area did it. He posts on the corral as TurboX2 (Dan Simons). He did a good job and I'll likely have him or Brian do the RPM upper for me. Let me know what your cam specs look like.

Yo Punk, you are talking about Angie Timmons at Daves Machining.510-797-9536
I know of another guy in Sac town that does probably the best work I have seen around these parts! If you want e-mail me and I can hook you up with him.
Just my opinion but I would stay clear from Gromm. But, to each his own.

aaron c ,i talked to brian and he said the lift is going to be 576/536 and duration is gonna be 236/228@.050 that is all he told me. i should get the cam and heads in about 2 weeks.you should do a leakdown test on your car that is the only way to really know whats wrong.it doesnt sound like your head gasket.
