Ok i'm a complete newb in the 5.0s(90-93). Are these reliable cars? I'm gonna go off to college next semester, would you feel safe driving from san jo to sacramento every other weekend? I really want one of these cars, are there any thing i should look for when purchasing one? Please help this newb
ThanksChris

as reliable as a civic? I don't think so.
But if you like to tinker, don't mind being quick for very little $$$, it's probably the car to have. Just my $0.02anything that breaks on these cars seems to be due to driver abuse/crappy shade-tree mechanics (such as myself)

I've been using my '89 for this purpose for 4+ years. While it has had minor stuff go wrong with it, it has only not started on me once when the battery died. I think if you find an unmodified clean one, it will last you a long long time.

Ok heres the situation. I got a POS saturn sc1 that i probably can get 3-4 grand tops for it. I'm a 17 year old with a 8 dollar job and have NO experience whatsoever with maintaining cars. Obviously i know the 3000 mile oil rule...but thats as far as my knowledge goes. Would it be a mistake to get myself into this? If so could someone PLEASE recommend me a car for 5k tops that feels much sportier than a 100hp(115 torque) POS. Thank you for your patience and comments.Chris

I'd be careful though. Depending on your intentions, it could be a bad idea. Take this in the way it is intended, constructive.teenagers tend to... well, kill themselves in cars such as a 5.0
racing, street racing, you name it.
that and the car can become an ungodly money-pit. Once the mod bug hits it won't stop!
call me mr. killjoy.
but if you can handle it, and then you won't wrap it around a tree the first time it rains... get one.
my brother is 19 and I steered him away from one. When he gets out of college in a couple years I'll hook him up though.
