Hello all,
The AC compressor and/or clutch on my 90GT is starting to make a "grinding" noise. I think that's a bad sign. It is factory air and has over 150,000 miles on it so I'm guessing its bearings are failing.
A reman compressor from Autozone lists around $200, ouch. This is a convertible so I never use the AC, although I was thinking about keeping it on the car for resale value.
I think my options are:
1. Buy somebody's parted-out AC compressor 2. Fork over the $200 to Autozone 3. Just get a clutch (?) 4. AC elimination kit
Any thoughts on this? Your opinions are appreciated.

You can always take the belt off and spin the compressor by hand to see if that is what's making the noise.
I have a used compressor I'd sell cheap also if you're interested.
If I were you though I'd just do the delete kit. It seems to me like most people that buy those cars don't intend on having the air conditioning work, it's just sort of a bonus. I'm not sure if the cost of fixing it is going to be worth it in the long run in terms of re-sale value.

More than likely, it's the clutch, not the compressor. Like 88 said, pull the belt, spin it by hand. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Ok, I pulled the belt and spun the pulley. It is making a grinding sound (and feel) as if sand were in there. Not a lot, but noticeable. I do not think there is sand in it. But very small flakes of something that looks like metal come out of it.
When running the car, the grinding sound gets louder when I turn on the AC.
Not sure if this means it is the clutch or the compressor, but I'm guessing I need to replace the whole unit. Don't know if I can replace the clutch separately, or if it would be worth the trouble.

The AC clutch is your problem. It takes 10 mins tops to swap it out. You can rent/borrow the tool from Autozone. All it takes is the removal of the 13mm nut inside the center recess, thread in the removal tool, done deal. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
