Hey guys haven't been around this forum in a while but I have a quick question regarding a clutch issues I started experiencing today hope you guys can help out

I was driving today getting onto the freeway and all was well, then all of the sudden I noticed my clutch pedal was bouncing back and forth maybe about an 1/2" to an 1", I noticed this because my left foot usually is hovering above the clutch pedal and it kept bouncing off my foot but eventually went away. Probably dumb on my part but I kept driving because I was going to go visit a friend in Discovery Bay. I exit off Hwy 4 Charter way and get into 3rd and I heard a very disturbing clunking noise and a lot of squealing all of the sudden. I called my friend and told him I am going to have to turn around and go back to Sac before my clutch goes out.

So here are the issues

Very loud squealing, sometimes it goes away.
Hard to engage into gear at times.
Very different clutch pedal feels, sometimes spongy, sometimes soft, sometimes hard
When I am actually in gear the car drives fine other than the high pitched squealing.

Any one care to guess what is wrong and how much it is going to cost me, called the shop but they are closed today. Oh and if you have any recommendations for shops in Sac I would greatly appreciate it.

Oh the car is is a 2001 Ford Mustang GT. It was actually in the calendar a few years back [Cool] [patriot]

+1 on throw out bearing and the clutch cable may have stretched too. Hope its due for a clutch cause you might as well do one while your that close and I would replace the cable at the same time. Also when you do replace the throw out bearing get one from Ford they are the only ones that last in these newer mustangs.

Thanks for the response guys. Does anyone know how much I am looking at for a shop to replace a throwout bearing (hoping for best case scenario and that it is the only problem)

Update

Ended up taking it to Clutch Mart on Arden. I heard good things about them and for a complete clutch job including clutch, bearing retainer, resurfacing flywheel, labor, etc is going to be $599. He said that more than likely the clutch fork and some other part is going to have to be replaced also but its just another $80 so I told him to go ahead and do it if needed.

Ford quoted me $950 so $579 sounds reasonable.

There was a sn95 era Cobra there that had a clutch job just done. He had the old clutch and various other parts on the counter and he explained a few things to me so that was pretty cool of him. If the workmanship is a good as their customer service I will be very pleased.

Oh he said he is using a Luk clutch, anyone have anything to say about them. [patriot]

Very good to hear about the Luk clutch.

I got a call with an update today. The bearing retainer was in pieces. The clutch fork and pivot ball is also being replaced since they were showing wear and its just the cost of parts to replace. He said he will save the parts so I can see for myself

Once again, if anyone needs their Clutch replaced or transmission worked on in Sacramento give Clutch Mart a try. Their customer services is absolutely amazing and their prices seem very reasonable, usually those two do not go hand-in-hand when dealing with a retail automotive repair shop. Frank is a very cool guy. I am planning on writing a testimonial for him to throw on their web page. [patriot]
