I just did my springs and shocks on my 83. It was fairly simple. I disconected my tie rod ends and shocks and supported the a arms with a jack. I let the a arm down very slowly until the spring was uncompressed. I then just popped it out with a crowbar. I tried a spring compressor but it just takes way too long and seems too dangerous. Be careful and take your time. The shocks are simple. Just unbolt the two bolts on the spindles and then unbolt the top nut on your caster camber plates. Good luck. [patriot]

If you are only changing the springs DON'T undo the top of the strut like previously mentioned. I've done many and this is how I do it.

Remove wheel
Remove brake caliper
support A-arm w/jack
remove the 2 lower strut bolts
let jack down slowly
push down on a-arm w/foot until spring falls out
Install other spring
Reinstall in oppostite order

This method has proved effective for me many times over. The only thing that you might need help on is when you are pushing down on the a-arm you might need an assistant to pull the spring out.
