I think I might do a better job if I had my own lift or even a pit in my garage but I don't. My problem is that I can never seem to install either an h-pipe or off road h-pipe correctly and am always left with an exhaust leak. After hours of attempting to correct the problem I'm forced to take it in to a shop to get it done right. I'd love to have my bbk off road h-pipe on the car and do the every two years pull it off for smog but its just to much of a pain in my ass since I never get it right. Is there a specific way in install the h-pipe? front first then back or back first then front or one corner then the next and so on? gets me so pissed off because I know this shouldn't be so hard but for me it just is.

Someone give me the idiot guide to h-pipe installation please [Frown]

you are not the only one. I hate exhaust. Is it leaking for the collector to the header?

well right now my stock pipe is on with no leaks,..had to take it in the shop to get it done as it was leaking. Whenever (I) do it yes it leaks up front by the headers. What sucks is I try so hard to line everything up evenly and tighting down everything evenly but end up with that terrible sound. I'm always told that my flanges aren't lines up...but from what I can see and reach they are. I wouldn't know how to line them up any other way.

The first thing you want to do is get the H-pipe bolted up in place front and rear with all the bolts lose. From here it is helpful to use a floor jack and a 2X4 to jack up the exhaust into a position where it will clear all the speed bumps and whatnot. Normally about 1/2" clearance between the pipe and the tranny crossmember. You are going to want to start in the front. Snug the front bolts or nuts on each side a little at a time. Go back and forth from drivers side to passanger side while watching how the H-pipe is mating to the ball flange on the header side. You want it to have even engaugement all the way around the ball flange. Tighten front till its torqued. Follow the same steps in the rear by going side to side and watching how the ball side of the H-pipe fits into the muffler side. One of the first things to consider is buying a high quality exhaust like bassani as these will usually bolt in with ease. BBK, flowtech and other junk companies will give you the most amount of trouble. I suggest if your pipe has a clamp holding the two parts together in the middle at the H that you get everything in place with the clamp and take it to a muffler shop to have the center section welded. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advise. When my bbk came I got the center welded like you said... while at the shop that was welding it I asked them to adjust it because of course I put it in wrong. Then they said it didn't fit right and that they would have to mandral bend it into position...so I'm like fuck fine just do it. $80 later it sounded great. then smog time came and I took it off and put in my stock pipe...some shit leaking. Now I'm just pissed off about the whole thing and dont' want to throw more money away having someone re-adjust it for $50 for 3 min. of work. I'll try your suggstions and see if I can't master the install. Like I said before If I had a lift or pit I'm sure I could get it down but with my car lowered and using low profile ramps its not easy for a 6'3" pussy like myself to crawl around under the car checking one corner then the next, tighten a little here then. Maybe it would be easier if I just jack the bitch WAY up onto jackstands instead of trying to shortcut and use ramps. [Frown] [Frown] [Frown]

Actually, I think ramps would work better. Jack stands might make the fitting even worse then you have it.

WHen i put on my stock H it had a small exhaust leak. (I had the pipes reworked to fit perfect with my offroad H). So basically the stock H doesn't fit correct anymore. I took it to the smog shop with the small leak, they didn't notice it. When I got back home I ripped it back off and put the o/r pipe back in and it was good as new.

I run a summit off road pipe. THis thing works great and it was only $110. FUGG BBK!!!

Yeah, I feel your pain also. I have the BBK off-road H and it leaks pretty badly also. But I really can't complain too much as I picked it up off a friend for $25 when he switched to long-tubes.

In the future, I think I will just drop the money into something with better quality. Maybe the Bassani. However, the Summit has a real attractive price. Is this a particularly good H-Pipe?

AFTER MARKET PIPES REQUIRE WASHERS AT THE HEADER FALNGES OR THEY EWILL NOT GET TIGHT ENOUGH THE THREADS BOTTOM OUT THE OTHER THING IS GET RID OF THE HANGERS THEY MAKE THE EXHAUST HANG DOWN TOO LOW GET IT ALL BOLTED UP NOT TIGHT FORNT AND BACK THEN JACK IT UP ALL THE WAY TO THE CROSS MEMBER TIGHTEN UP FRONT AND BACK WHEN TIGHT LET JACK DOWN H PIPE SHOULD DROPP ABOUT QUARTER INCH AND SEAL PERFECT THAT WAY IT SEALS AND HAS SPEED BUMP CLEARANCE
