Fastbacks started out in 65, no such thing as a 64 1/2 fastback. Any rust on this thing, lol.

its a 65. 66 has a different side scoop and different gauges.

this car needs a lot of work, but she'd be worth it, as long as the person who buys her does his own work.

It could still be a '64 1/2. They built fastbacks too. The engine codes (5th digit in VIN) are different than the '65. There are other diffferences but the easiest way to tell is the gauge cluster. The '64 1/2 had generators and the red light will say "GEN" while the '65 and later had alternators and say "ALT".

It looks like it has an alternator and the power steering pump is later too. If I had to guess, this car is a '65.

Sorry Iceman, unless the vin is earlier than these:

1st Dearborn 65 Mustang: 5FXXX250001 (1st known fastback - 5F09K250009)
1st San Jose 65 Mustang: 5RXXX125001

Then it theoretically could have been a 64 1/2 FB, but I guarantee you its not.....

You're splitting hairs. There was overlap in the production between '64 1/2 (also called early 65's) and the late '65 cars. Although rare, there are fastbacks out there with the generator system, the slats in the radiator core support, and the '64 1/2 hood. My point is that the production line is blurred. I had a '65 convertible that had a couple '64 1/2 pieces on it. Ford basically used the '64 1/2 parts they had until they were all gone.
