You were there huh? Didn't bother to say hi, I guess you didn't notice an old mustang pull up. Did you have the white mustang with the mudflaps?

I remember your car because it was kind of raggedy looking (no offense) and it had that messed up front bumper cover with all the yellow fiberglass showing.
You were leaving as I was walking in the door. I was looking at your car and you revved it a little while you backed up. I was the mexican looking guy with the shaved head. I don't know if you noticed me or my black drop in the parking lot.

Tell me about it! It took me 10 hours to do a cam swap on that thing! Nitrous hookups, alcohol injection, blower, strut tower brace & a MESS of guages & wires!
I thought my car was heavy at 3400lbs, but this thing weighs 3550 without driver!

I met him at the track. He was pulling mid-low 13's at 109mph. I knew something was seriously wrong with the combo. We put drew in the car & he managed a 12.2 @115.6mph.
The setup was 14lbs of boost, TW heads, stock shortblock, alcohol injection, & a Comp nitrous grind (212/224 114LSA). I offered to help the guy make more midrange by retarding the cam, but ended up recomending another cam. Aaron Cames & I recomended the TFS stage 1 on a 114ICL. I installed it & he went back out to the track. Drew pulled 12.3 @119.8mph missing 2nd gear (that's a gain of over 50RWHP from a cam swap!)....but he also blew the motor on that run. Not Drew's fault. Mark (the owner) tunes his car using his laptop.
He wanted me to do a HG job for him, but I didn't want to have him spend all the $$$ for a shortblock that desperately needed a rebuild.
Anyway, Mark just had a 347 built. 10.2 to 1 compression! Everything else the same.
I tried to talk him into lower compression, but he got a deal on the motor.... We'll see. I've talked him into 2 tunes. One for pump gas with very little timing & one on race gas for the track. The next time Drew gets in the drivers seat, it should be interesting.

Hey, I resemble that! That's my busy cobra. Check it out at http://93cobra.freeservers.com
I did not dyno that day because the new motor had only 100 miles on it. Runs great though. I think the compression is probably a bit lower than 10, probably about 9.6:1 but I can't get accurate info on that. Figure the heads were 66cc before machining, and they are basically just decked. Got 'em studded too, like the block, which is nice. Here's the new motor:
347 Stroker Engine custom built by Bob Anderson Motorsports:
· Ford SVO block bored .030 over
· SRP pistons
· Ford SVO forged I-beam rods
· Ford SVO cast stroker crank
· Federal Mogul bearings
· ARP head studs
· ARP main studs
· Thermal barrier coating on block, pistons, and heads
· Edelbrock water pump
· Ford SVO harmonic balancer
· Edelbrock high volume oil pump
· Non-chrome oil pan

It does have a horrible wing. It was in last monts "MODIFIED MAG". I runs low 12's, LOL. Somehow they tuned it to 400 HP to the wheels.
Its aweful purty, don't ya think?

Finaly made it to the site huh Mark!
If you do have 66cc heads, then yes compression is ~9.5-9.6. Did the engine builder open up the chambers & cc the heads? TW heads come with 61cc chambers.
I figured it out by hand like this:
(((4.03/2)^2) * PI * 3.4) = 43.3689 cubic inches in a 347 without accounting for the heads & HG.
(((4.030/2)^2) * PI * .041) = .52297 cubic inches. This is how much volume the HG adds. If your O-ringed gaskets have more/less scrunch, let me know. Nominal HG thickness is .041 inches.
Add these together * multiply by 2.54^3 (16.387) to get CC's. 719.256cc's + chamber volume + valve reliefs. (60cc's compensating for milling & standard 6.5cc valve reliefs) = 785.756cc's.
785.756 total cc's in your motor, compressed to ~75.07cc's. (chamber + gasket + valve reliefs)
So, compression = 785.756 / 75.07 = 10.467
Of course, you could always use this handy online calculator: http://www.fordmuscle.com/calculator/compression.shtml
*Edit* Did I read that right on your page? You have flat-top pistons??? If so, compression gets even higher. Of course, these calculations are assuming the block has been 'zero' decked. Ask the builder what it was decked to & I'll get a more accurate figure.
NM, I see you have valve relifed pistons.

i can't even imagine what i would do if someone else blew my motor, even it if wasn't their fault.

It's my belief that the HG had been going for a while. The heads were O-ringed, so it's hard to tell, but I found oil in the water when I did the cam install. This normally indicates the head was raising under boost. The cam added significant cylinder pressure & the motor needed to be re-tuned to compesate. But without a dyno it's real difficult to tune it properly. Keep in it till it pings, then back off the timing kinda thing. & the A/F ratio was all out-of-wack. It's really just guess work.
The motor had significant blowby. Let me elaborate....SERIOUS blowby! I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I wouldn't be surprised if the stock motor had a few broken rings. In fact, I'd expect it with the blowby it had. That setup should have been running 125mph+.

Nice setup. I had a couple of questions.
I heard tuning is much easier with just water injection than with the alcohol mix. Was there any problems?
Also, when does the water/alchohol injection start and how long does 5 gallons last?
What size nitrous shot do you run? Is it wet or dry? Does it mix okay while the water injection is running?
Thanks

So many questions! Let me take them one at a time.
1. Shaun, you are correct, the combustion chamber vol is 61cc, I probably was looking at the exhaust port vol. So my compression is likely quite high. I've had a bitch of a time trying to tune out the pinging, but I seem to have it licked now. This thing is a torque MONSTER!
2. Yes I do have flat top pistons. I don't know what the decking is, but you can look at the picture if you want to guess: http://93cobra.freeservers.com/photo.html
3. Drew's last run in my car was:
Reaction: .740
60ft: 1.829
330ft: 5.112
1/8th: 7.792 @92.741mph
1/4: 12.020 @117.718mph
4. I had an opportunity to scrutinize my HGs. There was no breakage, they were basically "scrubbed". I could see where the surface material was rubbed off over a large area. This suggests heat expansion and contraction were different on the upper (aluminum) and lower (iron) contact surfaces. I had not retorqued my heads since I installed them in 2001. I'm told I should retorque them every year. The new block is studded, perhaps this will make it easier.
5. I actually wanted to blow the motor!!! Not really, but the motor had 90,000 hard miles on it, the rings were shot, and I had all these great power adders that I really wanted to get a 347 under. So I took a lot more chances with the stock motor than I plan to with the new stroker.
6. After the cam swap I did not hit the dyno, because I didn't think it would change AF. Boy was I wrong! As soon as this motor is broken in, it's dyno time.
7. Tuning for the alky was much easier than tuning for the nitrous. I really just added 6 degrees of WOT timing (that was 25 total) and removed 10% of WOT fuel. Dialing in AF for the nitrous was much harder, and took a couple hours of dyno time, and I never did get it quite right.
8. I don't run nitrous and alky at the same time, under the assumption that the nitrous will freeze the water/alky mixture, causing it to coat the intake or pepper my intake with ice crystals. The nitrous shot is 45 and it's dry. I just blow it into the intake and have a line to the FP regulator to increase fuel.
9. The 5 gallon capacity should last me several months during street driving. A big day at the track will use about a gallon. I currently have a WOT switch but just ordered a low-pressure switch (0.1 psi) that I will install when it arrives. My car easily goes into boost at part throttle, and the ACT skyrockets.
10. Hey, you got me started on my car! I can do this all day! ;-)

Just wait till you get that thing on a dyno Mark.
HP should peak just a hair higher then Torque on that setup. Peak torque @4400rpm & HP at ~5400-5600. Get a ported lower intake & it'll add another few HP up top & raise where peak HP falls. But I don't think you'll have a problem making power. I think you'll have major traction issues. & a few tuning hurdles.

But if nitrous freezes the water, wouldn't it freeze the fuel on a wet kit too rendering it useless?
Or does fuel have an extra low freezing point compared to water?
When the water sprays, is it an on/ off thing no matter what the boost is when activated, or does the spray increase with rpm or boost?

Would a wet kit solve the a/f tuning on the nitrous since you can play with the pills on the fuel spray?

I don't know, possibly. I just didn't want to mess with it, but it could make a good combination. To be honest, I'm very hesitant to run the nitrous on this motor.

Mine is just on/off.

Best et 11.7 at 116mph on motor
Did I read that right???!!! Surely you don't mean "motor only", no forced induction or power adders...

11.7 was on motor only and et streets. I only got in 2 runs with those tires and thought with practice 11.4 was possible.
I am tuning a low boost sc in the next 2 weeks ( new engine controller on it's way to me now) with a small shot of nitrous. I have a nitrous wet kit already on and a water injection kit that I have to install.
So a lot of what you are doing is similar to me and of great interest . .so thanks for your replies. I will probably be at the next cruise on the 15th. Look for a blue & white viper gts and a little short asian guy if you go.
