Yeah, I'm slacking. I need to get both my stangs on the list. If I can do it before this season is over I will. The coupe is running great now & I gotta see what the coyotes gonna run. Hoping for mid 12's or better. Hoping for high 11's or better out of the coupe

I liked it. Much improved. Not nearly as bumpy on the big end, traction was super consistent. Can't wait for next time to let some air out of the slicks and go 11's!

Yup, I forgot my good tire gauge. The one I brought said 12psi, so I left the pressure alone. I came home they were both actually at 20psi. I think a few psi less and I could launch a lot harder.

VERY impressive. you will see 11's soon. Don't get too comfortable as soon as the grey car runs you will be moving back a spot.

Thank you, it's much faster than expected. I was expecting mid/high 12's since i have hardly any mods & still new to driving it. Good for my first time out i think. A little friendly competition makes me run better that's for sure.
I think with more seat time, a WOT shifter, less PSI in the slicks, & less fuel in the tank 11's shouldn't be too hard. Especially if i move to a 28" slick like i should have since i have 3.73's. The 26" tires are a bit shorter than my street tires as you can see.

113mph you should be low 12s to high 11s. Your 60s definitely need to come down a lot. Seems the chassis may not be working to its fullest.

Agreed. I think 20psi in the slicks was too much. I forgot my digital psi gauge at home. The cheap one i was using said 12-14psi all night so i didnt want to air down. When i got home i checked them they were at 20psi. It hooked good, didnt bog, didnt spin.
I think if I air these down a little, & install an n2mb WOT shifter and practice a little more Ill run 11's. Especially if i go out with less fuel in the tank. I had 3/4 tank when I started racing and just barely under 1/2 tank after my 12 runs.

Lots more in it with seat time.
Here's a video of my first day at the track with the following mods:
E85 tune (404HP STD corrected, 390SAE)
Slicks/skinnies
Roush upper control arm
FRPP Dif girdle
E85 was worth 12HP on this car, so 12HP over stock + slicks/skinnies = 11's no problem.

That's awesome. Spawns a lot of questions for me.
I run e85 in my SRT. I had to upgrade my fuel pump, injectors, & get a tune to run it. What's it take in the coyotes?
From your experience how much will the factory clutch take before giving up?(runs down the track, horsepower)
What were you launching and shifting at?
How are the mt82 & 8.8's on the coyotes(power handling)?
Posted by 93PONY (Member # 60) on
:
Injectors only for an all motor coyote to swap to E85.
I had over 300 drag passes on the stock clutch/Trans launching anywhere from 4k to 6k.
Shift points with the stock IM were 6700/6800.
I did do a few things (later) to help with shifting, like bleed out the factory DOT 3 fluid and run Tilton TSR-1.

This is when I knew I wanted a Coyote

Thanks for the info, it seems to be hit or miss whether or not an mt82 will last. It looks more and more like it's due to the driver. I've done the energy suspension and whiteline bushings to help with shifting and they do that flawlessly. I didn't have any shifting problems during my dozen passes.
Since I have 3.73's I think the 26" slicks are hurting my MPH & ET a little since I'm riding 4th out to over 7k through the traps, but the 26's are still a lot better than street tires, especially at the $100 my buddy sold em to me for.
How much of a difference did the fluid change make for shifting? Did you wind up doing a braided clutch cable as well?
My shifting was not as consistent as it needs to be as far as the rpm range goes. I think most of the time I wasn't shifting until the red light on the tach came on. I'm guessing that's at 7k?
I can set a shift light on my diablosport Trinity next time

Old used slicks may be an issue too. Just something to look at.

Yeah I was thinking that as well. A combination of old used slicks, too short of slicks, and too much tire pressure in the slicks. Either way they definitely hooked much better than street tires.
I think my burnouts were likely all too short, and probably not launching hard enough. The highest I launched at was 3500rpm off the neutral rev limiter.
I'm uploading more of my race videos as I'm typing this, so if you guys have time please watch them and let me know what you think.
This was my first time ever on a real drag slick. I went out on the McReary dirt track tires, and American Racer asphalt racing slicks before.

Honestly when I was having issues at the line, I found the problem to be mostly in the shocks.

My shocks are oem with 21k miles. They definitely aren't meant for drag racing, but they should be in decent shape for what they are

Your burnout is fine, your staging is inconsistent and your spinning like crazy... anything else you want to hear?

Possible fixes would help. Constructive criticism welcomed. I've only raced at the track maybe a dozen times in my life, this was my first time on a real drag slick. In my SRT @ the track I cut consistent 2.0 60' times on 225/50/17 street tires, so I know 1.9x 60' on slicks isn't where it should be.
I would bet the spinning was caused by 20psi in the slicks. I was launching at 3500rpm at the most. Or possibly old used slicks, or maybe even the brand new paving of the track? Maybe a combo of all of those.
What do you mean by staging inconsistent? I try to stage as shallow as possible. Or do you mean trying to stage in the groove?
Posted by WillS (Member # 13793) on
:
The inconsistency in the stage is how you are bumping the lights. This is a common problem with a manual transmission. Its just something you will have to work on. Every bit you bump in is a trade off of ET/reaction time. So if you bump in deep you will get a faster light but slower ET.
The 20psi definitely could be a part of the spinning problem. Street shocks and drag shocks work differently. Can the street shocks work, yes. Will a set of drag shocks drastically improve it, YES. For my car, I can not launch above 3400rpm at Sacramento Raceway as the track will not handle it. You can try bringing down the RPM and see if that helps out. Old slicks can be a problem. Also with how heavy the newer cars are, I recommend running a tube in the tires or get away from all that and just put drag radials on the car.

Yeah, I try to stage as shallow as possible, like you said, with a manual car it's a little bit of a pain.
If Lakewood makes some 50/50's for my car and it still uses a traditional shock in the rear they would be worth the purchase. I have them on my 93, & they work fine even on the street.
I suppose the best thing to try would be remember my good tire psi gauge & drop the pressure. If that doesn't do anything then I'll need some new slicks. I like slicks because they absorb a lot of the shock from clutch dumps vs. Drag radials, so I'll be sticking with slicks for sure.
New 28" slicks will likely be all it takes to get to the 11's. Less fuel in the tank wouldn't hurt either.

Actually drag radials love being shocked compared to slicks. The harder you shock them the happier they are.

Yes, but the shock is transferred more to the drivetrain with drag radials than slicks. Slicks absorb a lot of the shock rather than transfer it. This is how many people run 10's on stock axles on SRT-4's. Drag radials start breaking axles in the low 12's on SRT's, I would imagine the same thing applies to Mustangs.

Still have to bring it out now that I have it tuned, & 25psi. Should run low 12's without trying hard @ 118+ or high 11's with some good 60' times. All on stock turbo. I still have a stage 3 turbo I need to install to yield mid/low 11's, but will need a beefy clutch to handle that much boost.
One day I would like to take all three cars out and run them all on the same day.

Thats ironic, cause I have seen no issues with x275 cars running drag radials on stock 8.8 and driveshaft...
I ran drag radials (hoosiers and MT) and had no issues in my drivetrain. The key is to have a quick extension and slow rebound for drag radials.

I've been on drag radials only a few times at the track, compared to slicks I would much rather use slicks. Slicks feel a lot more smooth. Only exception is on the big end with low pressure you get slick dance
Posted by WillS (Member # 13793) on

I get no dance at top end and I am not running tubes either. Going to tubes for 2015 season. Most of your dance is actually from bumpsteer.

I didn't have any dance this time, gotta get to 12psi or lower for that I believe

I saw your dyno results for the afe, & k&n filter vs stock filter on the other forum. Did you ever do any 1/4 mile comparisons between these filters in the stock air box?
