Went to the track on Wednesday to take advantage of the weather, (mid 30's here in South Florida)
Track opens @ 6pm, I get there at about 6:30 and see a helicopter landing at the end of the drag strip. After waiting about an hour, they announce that there will be no racing
Here is the article from the Palm Beach Post

An 18 year old with a 2006 Vette? Seriously??? At least his parents were there to see the mistake they made.

I thought 18 makes you a legal adult, also at 18 you can go fight a war but you cant drive a corvette at a track at 108 MPH. Also I just never understood why at 18 you can die for this Country but you cant drink. And for record I have 4 kids and one is 17.

I think you may have missed the point of the post. I would not feel comfortable with a 18 year old kid racing a vette at the track given his amount of driving experiance encase something went wrong. Now if he had been racing since he was 8 in JR dragsters it would have been different. I hope he pulls through. I wonder if he had a helmet on? Now you can feel free to turn your kids loose on what ever you want that is your choice. GSXR1000 maybe would that make you nervous?

Not sure why he crashed, but he's 18, which is old enough to operate a fast car. If he had a mid 12 second 5.0 stang, would the parents be stupid then? I'm just saying we should speculate that he's a rich as punk. He might be a rich cool kid that had a medical problem or mechanical failure on his chevy. Hope he's ok.
I think I was 19 or 20 and running 12.40s in a 30 year old car with stock suspension and drum brakes! Now that's asking for trouble!

Absolutely !!!!! I know that I had 2 years driving experience when I got my first 5.0 @ 18 years old. It was a bone stock 83 Capri. Totalled it 29 days after I bought it. It wasn't due to lack of experience, it was a total lack of respect for what the car could and could not do.
Years later I told my Dad he should NEVER have co-signed for that car.
Go ahead, blast away. I can take it

Two things come to my mind here. Either this kid was so clueless he had no idea where the end of the quarter mile was or he was trying to commit suicide. More then likely clueless is the answer. Tough lesson for the kid and the parents but if he survives hopefully it will be a "teaching moment" for them all.

The real question is why is an 06 vette only trapping 108?
In all reality, that sucks. I bought my 5.0 when I was 17, saved for it, and told my parents I was buying another truck when I went to buy it. They were VERY upset when I came home with the car. I wasn't allowed home for a few days, but when I did, my dad asked for the keys. He left, came back, and told me when his 442 he had was faster, gave me the keys back and said dont kill your self. I guess he figured out how slow they are stock.

When I came home with my vert. My dad did not let me drive it till I installed a roll bar.

sad, but what car you are in has nothing to do with it.
You can die just as easily in an 88 escort.

lol if you dont hit your brakes racing your escort you wreck doing 65.

Something must have happened to him going down the track. The shut down areas are huge, he couldn't have possibly thought that the race wasn't over yet, could he? Well, maybe in a Vette that keeps pulling at speed. Maybe he was watching the speedo or something and trying to hit 120mph?
I hope the poor kid pulls through. This is a pretty sad story.
An 06 Vette is really safe. Remember, a 15 1/2 year old can take a written test and get his motorcycle permit and go buy a 150hp bike that runs 10's at 130mph. You can find these bikes used nowaday's for a few grand. That is dangerous. More so on the street though than on a track. It is better to build up to the fast car or bike, especially if you build it yourself because you appreciate it a lot more and hopefully won't do something stupid on the street.

It almost sounds like maybe the poor kid my have mad something happen to him before the end of the track, siezure, black out something medically wrong because even not knowing how to drive or not knowing the track he still would have known that there was a barrier he was geetng close to and to hit the breaks. It's a theory. Either that or he made a retard move. In any case hope he pulls threw and lives to race another day
Posted by John91coupe (Member # 18) on

Here's another "theory". Maybe this kid had no idea where the quarter mile ended. He might have had this notion that his corvette should do 140 in the quarter and just watched the speedometer until he ran out of track. Then again, maybe it was just stupidity.

Poor kid, if I was him I'd contact Chevrolet and tell them my brakes went out at the track (don't know if he even tried using them or not but somebodies gotta pay for what happened, why not Chevy
) and try and get a new Vette, they'd probably get a fat settlement and maybe even a brand new Corvette!
