Who is going out?

Don, good luck with your quest for the 12's! I am going to guess 13.001 @ 106.5mph. Just kidding, if you ran a 13.3 on Wednesday, you should be able to get a 12.95 @ 106.5 mph with sticky tires if you can get your 60 ft under 1.9. If you get too excited, put too much faith in the drag radials, and launch too hard and spin then you will get 13.001 with a 1.95 60ft. I am sure that your speed will be up with the cold weather and the fact that the weekend events are always faster for some reason.

Jersey, are you going? I am sure that you can hit the 12's on a weekend event. You need to go out and compete with Don.

I won't be there so let me know how you guys do.

Good luck.

Craig

Took the car out with the tires yesterday. A, with the inch smaller wheel and shorter side wall on the tire it looks like SHIT in the rear, imo. B, don't think it'll hook hard enough for my 12 second pass with only a cold air as power adder.

Posted by need-a-motor (Member # 5415) on :

It will be very hard to do. You are still going to have to ride the clutch a little with those tires. You can't shock them off the line by dropping the clutch at 4000 like you can with the ET Streets. They prep the track really well on the weekend events and for some reason my MPH is always higher as well. It just depends on how good your conditions were when you ran the 13.33. What was your 60ft on that run? You will need to be in the 1.8's to hit the 12's. If you speed stays at 105mph, you will probably need a 1.80 which will be tough.

Good Luck,
Craig

that what cannot be done? almost stock 05 gt in the 12s? i don't agree. i think it could be done.
I asked people about the 96 cobra and most people said it would go high 13s stock at best.
i managed to get it into the mid 13s.. and have heard of a stock one going 13.0.
SO just prove them wrong tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow Don.

BTW, we missed you out there today Craig! You and Ron need to get your MUSTANGS back out there! I believe Ron got a good video of the run that I'm sure he'll post up when he has time. I was VERY appreciative he stayed around to tape my run after waiting SOOOO long between runs!

I guess that you weren't trying to win because with that reaction time you should have had room to lift at the end. Or did the other guy red light or break out worse?

Congratulations on the 12.96! My 12.95 guess was pretty close, but I was giving you an extra mph. I thought that you were going to have to go under 1.9 to hit the 12's with 105mph. FYI, the GT500 that I saw out there ran a best of 12.67 with the same ET Street drag radials. It was a lot warmer that day and he had an extra 5mph, but you would be pretty damn close to him.

Hopefully I will get a motor one of these days and be able to race with you guys again. The builder is still waiting for Dart to send him a block, so I don't even know when he is going to start on it! Add gears and a few more mods and then we can race when I get my motor. It will be pretty close until I put the S-trim back on.

Ya, to be honest, I'm already looking towards 11's N/A. Heck, as of right now I can get that 1.9 down to a 1.7-.8 and I'll have a mid 12.7. Now add gears and 20RWHP from boltons I think I'm there.

I got all 1.75s. and one 1.81 against Don, that was my worst 60 and worst time of the day and still won. [Razz]
My mph stayed at 103 for 2 runs until i realized that 2 of my floormats were stuck under the gas pedal
[Mad]
and then went back up to 104s
Seems that 104 is my mph as of right now. i dunno if it's enough to get me in the 12s Ron was saying that he got into the 12s with 105 so we'll just have to wait and see.
Dons car pulls hard. i got him of the launch but he was gaining pretty fast on 3rd and 4th. luckily, for me, we ran out of track-while i flipped him off- [Razz]

sounds like you guys are doing great.

104 should get you into the 12.9X range with a 1.7X 60ft and some aggressive driving.

Mine went 13.08 @ 102.6 w/ 1.7x 60ft

Posted by need-a-motor (Member # 5415) on :

Hey Don,

Jersey is launching really well now, so the only way someone could do better is if he could shift faster or if he picked a better shift point.

Every mph is worth about a tenth and every tenth in the 60ft is worth about .15 in the 1/4. So, if he has you by almost .2 in the 60ft, that should be about .3 in the 1/4. If you are 1.5mph faster, that should take .15 away from his .3 lead. That still puts him .15 ahead if you both shifted the same. Are you finishing in 3rd? If so, then he has one more shift to do which will take away some of his advantage. Anyway, a good 60ft can make up for a big mph deficit. If you put gears in your car and ran some bias ply ET Streets so you could launch the hell out of it and get mid 1.7 60fts like Ron in his Mach, you would be in the mid 12's.

The last time I was out there I ran 11.90 with only 113 mph. This was with a 1.599 60ft.

Jersey, I have run a 12.99 NA in my car at 105mph, but I bogged it off the line and got a 1.85 60ft. The 3.55 gears were too tall for that much traction and that little of horsepower. 105mph is enough to hit the 12's since you have low gears and can get a 1.75 60ft.

Craig

Craig, with the smaller tires I HAVE to shift to 4th well before the end of the track.

Edit: Remember, that was my only real run knowing what the tires could do. A 1.933 60 foot is NOT NEARLY the best I can get out of them. They have consistent 1.8's in them easy and that should equate to consistent high 12.8's.

This run was not accurate. It was the first time I had ran with these tires. Everyone was scaring me saying DO NOT shock drag radials, so I launched at 2,200 and it BOGGED/FELL ON ITS FACE! I ran a 2.4 60 foot time, AND THERE WAS NO TIRE SPIN AT ALL, IT WAS ALLLLL BOG. The next time out I launched at 3,500 and dropped the clutch and it still hooked and bogged to the tune of a 1.93 60 foot time. With the stock gears and lack of power I need to launch at 4k +.

Now I know [Wink]

Thanks, my shifting needs improvement.
I got some good hand positioning tips from Don and Vince on the later rounds (after missing a gear and getting sideways) where the heck can i get that extra 1mph...
I need to learn to power shift. granny shifting is not cutting it.

I think i might remove my seats and go on a diet for the next event. [Razz] [Razz]

Hey Don,

I can't believe those tires hook that well. Sorry if I misled you. The only car that I have actually raced with those tires was Deray's turbo 331 and roadrace suspension. That was a little different with that much power. I believe that I managed a 1.78 60ft on my 11.60 pass at 122mph, but the rest of them were in the 1.9's because I tried to launch a little harder and kept spinning.

Even on your 12.96 run, you can see that the car bogs a little. I guess you need to launch it even harder or try to slip the clutch a little. Trying to finess the clutch is a pain in the ass. I like to find the right rpm and just drop it. It is also very difficult to get a good reaction while feathering the clutch.

Jersey, I forgot to congratulate you on making it to the semi finals. It sounds like you are running that thing really consistently. Don't line up with me in eliminations when I get back out there!

Craig

Well after waiting 6 hours I finally got to see something exciting so I couldn't hold back.

Don, You have to remember you won't be able to launch that thing at 4000 on a Wednesday night. The weekend events are always prep'd better especially after two 45 min clean ups and extra layers of VHT this weekend. The guy who oiled the track down the first time they let run again and he oiled it down for a second time. Anyway, I ran a set of Nitto's, which aren't much better than street tires, on a weekend event and dead hooked at 3500rpm launch. I pumped them up two lbs for the next run and launched at 3500 again and it blew them off through first and second gear. So, if those MT radials are anything like the Nitto's they have a small margin when it comes to the "sweet" spot.

Jersey, congrats on the semi-finals, you were launching the hell out of your car. I thought your shifts were very good, not much room for improvement. I don't know why your speed wasn't in the 105's when the air was nice and cool and there was no wind at all. It wouldn't hurt to change your fuel filter and maybe run a pound more of air pressure in the rear tires or a little less fuel in the tank. Maybe even check your TPS voltage to make sure you are getting full throttle and what the hell are you doing with two floor mats on the drivers side?... take them out when you race.

I will hopefully be able to start on my car soon but I don't have a garage to work in so I'm waiting until the temp gets a little higher and there is no chance of rain. I'm going to run the same tires as Don so I hope I can still keep getting low 1.7's with them.

-Ron

Well, even with the new motor I will not be able to make it out every week. With 2 kids now and gas prices where they are, I will lucky if I make it out twice a month.

I can't believe how well these little 3 and 4 valve per cylinder 4.6 motors do. I had to do a lot to my car to be able to run what Don just did. Hell, even the 2 valve 4.6's do pretty well, like the one in my wife's Explorer, which is the same as the Mustang not the F150.
