Like the title says. Who here is an investor in some type of way with money? Whether it be passive income or real estate. Not as in who is running a business either. Im talking do any of you literally just invest money and get a return on it without having to literally work a 40hr job for it. I sold most of my toys and would rather invest it on something that will get a return thats not 1 percent nor 50 percent. Enlighten a young fellow. Thanks and much appreciated.5307748968

Crypto currencies are hot ---- https://californiafords.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=063142

Bitcoin is a huge bubble now. Other currencies like https://z.cash have a better long term vision.

If you are starting out. Open up an account through someone like Vanguard. Start with a Roth IRA brokerage account. All of your money invested will grow tax free. You can only contrubute a max of 5,500.00 per year. You can also start a brokerage account through vanguard and invest in ETFs, mutual funds and stocks.

I'd suggest starting out with low cost mutual funds and ETFs (Total stock market funds, s&p 500 funds, international funds and growth and income funds.) Buying stocks can be done after you have built up some cash.

The Market IMHO is very high and should see a correction in the future. That being said I personally have a majority of my money in cash, or invested in some higher risk products like TVIX, UVXY and VXX.

Open a 401k or ira. This year the market has been phenomenal. I ended up 22%+ in my 401k for 2017.

Go to bogleheads.com and do a bunch of reading.

How much is roughly being returned on a 5500 investment out of pocket though on say a 1 year basis?

Investing in a Roth or 401k should be looked at as a longer term thing. You let compound interest work for you.

I have a decent amount of $ in vtsax through vanguard.

You should be thinking long term investing at a young age.

If you started a Roth IRA at 18 years old. Invested the max 5,500.00 until you were 65 years old...... and you averaged 10% over that time period.

You would end up with over 5 million dollars. Tax free..... Because you invested the money with post tax income. So it grows tax free. That's over 4.5 million dollars in growth.

There's no reason why anyone in the united states should retire broke. If eveyone just lived on less than what they made. This country would be a lot better off.

I’m sure a lot of it has to deal with up bringing. Many people are not taught about saving/investing in the household. Luckily my dad taught my brother and I early. I have had a 401k and Roth IRA since 18. Although, my dad basically forced me to open them lol.

depends on how u want to invest

long term...retirement funds, slow earnings over years, letting other people make money off your money

stocks,u can do very well and make way more than retirement style investing..if u get good enough, then u can do both the above

crypto currencies are bringing more $$ per $$ invested at this time, yet wont be like that forever..u can make some big $$..also loose big $$ as well but if u are on your game,u can make big $$

GOT TO LOVE EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAYS BITCOIN IS A BUBBLE...means they dont know what they are talking about

Litecoin and Etherium is where I’m heavily invested currently, going to #HODL for as long as I can

Posted by Martinna (Member # 12493) on :

351w --- When did you get in on Litecoin and Etherium? Neither of them are private and Etherium's is going to choke in 2018 like bicoin's did in 2017. It now costs $20 a transaction for bitcoin. They can't scale. Another problem with Litecoin and Etherium is they're like bitcoin. The world can see your transactions. What do you think of https://z.cash ? Everyone is saying it's the best one for privacy and has grown about the same amount as bitcoin over the past year.

Posted by 351w (Member # 11875) on :

I got Litecoin at $79 a coin and Etherium around $300 around August of last year. Litecoin isn't as expensive for transactions as Bitcoin, it's also a lot faster. Etherium has some technology that allows it integrate into uses like paying tolls and autopay type stuff. By no means am I am expert on them, I just like their upside which I think is huge in 2018. Litecoin may soon be accepted on eBay, Amazon and potentially tied in with Facebook somehow.

Posted by Martinna (Member # 12493) on :

351w ---- Good investment. Litecoin suffers from the same scaling problem as bitcoin. Transaction fees for bitcoin are now $20 and its slow. In 2018 the same thing will happen to Etherium. The practical uses you listed for Etherium apply more to z.cash. Etherium's digital contracts make it unique. Zcash's privacy and potential to replace paper currency make it unique.

i invest my money into modifying my mustang cuz ROI is excellent..

Posted by venomous99 (Member # 1917) on :

more seriously, diversify..i put the max i could into retirement(401k, IRA/roth IRA), hold stocks from work, some ETF and invest real estate when the time is right. i have cash stashed away for the next down turn in real estate to acquire more property. u wanna buy when its a buyers market.

crypto is intriguing and something i plan to do as a short term play to diversify...but itll be a small amount of money that would be like gambling. tons of ppl have killed it in crypto and if you're brave you might make a fortune.

Posted by SLOWBACK 67 (Member # 6348) on :

^ I hear ya. I am not one to short stocks or buy on margin..... But shorting BITCOIN was a thought for a while.

I also am waiting for the right time to buy. I have almost enough set aside for 20% down on a home. [patriot]

Posted by Martinna (Member # 12493) on :

venomous99 ----- solid advice. Who ever got in on z.cash when I suggested it a year ago would have multiplied their money by 15 or 20 times. A 10 fold increase in your investment is unbelievable. What would a 20 fold increase buy you? If you put in $10K a year ago in bit coin or zcash, you'd have about $175K today. You went from car down payment money to house down payment money in one year. It would have been better to get in on apple stock the first year it was released to the public. The guys that got in on year 5 aren't crying about it today though. They also did well. That's how crypto goes. High risk, high reward. If you want to be safe, get a CD at 2%.

Posted by SLOWBACK 67 (Member # 6348) on :

^175k IF you cashed out and paid capital gains. Problem is, most of these people who got in late and getting a pump and dump.

Maybe someday in the future this currency will be of use. But at this time it's too much of a gamble IMHO. I'll make steady gains over decades and retire very rich. I don't feel the need to gamble on waking up a rich man one day, then being dead broke the next. It's not real money until you sell.

Are any of you guys getting any passive income though on a monthly basis that you can actually touch without getting penalized etc.Is anyone buying and reselling realestate. I understand it takes time and im not trying to get rich over night because it takes times and thats fine. I heard something on the radio the other day about being an investor with real estate and not having to do anything but fund some of the capital and you get a return on it. Not sure the percentage. Im not looking to be 80 years old either and enjoying my income. Lifes too short for that. Not afraid to take the risk either as long as its a calculated one.Just cant stand to have money and it just sitting there when it could be making me money.

im pretty conservative when it comes to investments hence the reason why id prefer to put the bulk in real estate instead of going in on the market that has high risk. keep your dough and get in when the time is right. i got in 5 years ago when like 3/4 of the market was foreclosure and shortsales and if anyone had dough back then and credit to buy, youd be sitting on at least a 2-3x gain on property value today. of course, its nothing until you actually sell but for me this is all long term shiet that ill sit on, pass on to the next generation and milk while im alive.lol nothing wrong w/ investing in the stock market and other stuff, its a matter of how much risk you wanna take on.

martinna, whats crazy is if you invested in anything the past few years whether that be in real estate, stocks, crypto youd be making money. we are a period of uncharted territory from stock market hitting all time highs and real estate trending up. history will repeat itself so we're bound to see some corrections.when that happens hopefully we wouldve gotten out and get back in. its all a gamble.
i would never put money into a worthless CD. 2% is some bullshiet.

Money coming in from a rental will.be taxed at your normal tax rate. Flipping houses is tough of you can't pick up properties for dirt cheap. My parents have 4 rental homes ( one has a studio apartment under it, so it rents as 5 total units)
They average around 7,000 a month in rental income. So about 84k before taxes in passive rental income. You always need to screen renters and make sure you have a lot cash ready for repairs. [patriot]

Posted by stangin' (Member # 514) on :

getting to a point where you're able to live off of passive income takes a lot of time and smart investing. just bc one has money to do so doesn't always guarantee that it'll work out that way. investing is always a gamble.

figure out what you're interested in most, whether it's the stock market, real estate, or investing in a business, you gotta learn it inside and out. only then can will you be able to calculate your risk on your investments. eventually, like most people who like to invest, you end up dabbling in all of the above.

again referring to "bubble popping" means u dont know what u are talking about.....

the only reason any crypto currency goes up and down is because of the people who buy it and sell it for profit,or investors who panic and sell after worrying about loosing more

that and the fact that any crypto currency is at a stage where it can be bought or sold for profit or loss

regular currency is not affected because everyone uses it

if u win the largest lottery in US history, and they dont take any taxes, and u have 1.5b in cash on pallets, and put lighter fluid to it and set it on fire, when u wake up in the morning, the $1 bill u have in your pocket is worth $1...if u sell the 1.5b in cash for $1..your $1 in your pocket is still worth $1

if/when crypto currency gets to the stage where so many people are invested in it,then it will be stable and price wont drastically go up and down..but even then there are too many to choose,from,90 percent are a complete waste of time and will never amount to anything

the only way it will ever work,is to have only a couple, which right now is bitcoin, ripple and ethereum..all of which have good and bad points

ripple was doing great, until it was found out they can freeze your transactions and reverse/take your $$

also, all but one digital currency has the option of cease trade, because it is being controlled by who ever created the coin or business who did

bitcoin is not governed, meaning it can be $20k today and $1 tomorrow, and no one can cease its trade,a company who sells digital currency such as coinbase can cease buying or selling it,but cant stop the over all use of it

^ It's a pump ans dump scam. People will loose a lot of money betting on crypto. When crypto is regulated and accepted as a univesal currency and backed by real assets/countries....... I will consider owning it. Until then, I have no reason to gamble on it.

Your dollar bills are not backed by real assets. There is no more gold standard. Your government prints more when it needs to. Crypto currency is the future. If you gambled $1000 when we first started talking about it on this site, you would have had $10,000 today. Crypo is always going up.
