I am interested in getting into the oil changing business. If you personally own one please tell me the income potential. Is it true the oil industry can help you in starting up your business?

I used to be a general manager for a few of them...We called changing oil a "loss leader"...the oil and changing is the loss, the other sales is where you will need to focus your money making (car washing, detailing, other vehicle servicing) in order to turn a good profit...
There is not a lot of money in it...and 80% of your customers will not pay a high enough for they are expecting.

Oil changes DO NOT MAKE MONEY. You do oil changes purely to be able to inspect vehicles and upsell. You allow an oil change to be a loss leader so you get a chance to see the vehicle.

There is money in it if done right.. A lot of county rules and regulations you have to look into. Minimum fine of 10k for environmental violations.. Good luck finding old shops with pits because the top competitors snatch up real quick.. Like mentioned oil change no money, your other services where you make your bucks. Lights, filter, gear boxes, trans services, rad services, etc etc.. The goal is car count 20 a day with a 70 dollar average at a minimum.. Keep in mind your standard 3 month 3 miles is out the window.. Try 5-15 mile services and sealed transmissions.. A lot of the chains are doing brakes and more on services to stay in business..
