So I go over to my buddies house for a kick it with a bunch of our friends on 100th near International in Oakland. We were watching a movie when we hear our friends dogs start to bark. We didn't think anything of it so we continue to watch the movie. As one of our friends is leaving, he sees that his car was broken into. He called OPD to make a report but was told "the situation isn't serious enough to send a unit out." Big deal.. there's homicides everyday over there, I get it. We are looking thru his car to see what the thieves left behind when we see a gold buick la sabre stop next to us, made a left turn, and drove about 3 homes down. As the car stops, all you here is the sound of about 10 shots as the driver is spraying them everywhere. I run down a side street, jump a couple fences and call 911 to report the gunshots being shot right near us into a home and all of my friends are hiding out. 911 tells me they had placed the call and units are on their way. 20 mins after I call, not one single cop even drives by to inspect the area, to get clues, or to make sure innocent people are alright. I guess attempted murder isn't serious enough either..

I understand that oakland is a dangerous city to be in, but how the hell do we get these low life pieces of s**t of the streets if our emergency personnel can't even make an etempt to take charge? This is just ridiculous.

It certainly is disconcerting.

I've called 911 in Richmond before and got no answer, just rung and rung. Unbelievable.

I guess parts of Oakland and Richmond are considered optional for the PD.

I personally know Oakland Cops...and you should hear some of their stories. If you think your situation sucked...try hearing about babies in microwaves, people hanging themselves in their garages, homicides, etc. It sucks that they didn't respond to your call, but they usually have a list of 20-30 calls listed out to respond to as soon as their shifts start. Prioritization is a son of a @#%^! when everything is urgent.

If you want to make a difference, join them. I think OPD is hiring.

I'm thinking you were below international in the alphabets . A st, B st , etc. Gunshots happen in that area all the time and your lucky if they respond at all if no one is hit by the gunfire. They even have shot spotter technology over there and are supposed to know just about were the gunfire came from. The dogs in the area are constantly barking at dopefiends all day ripping off the neighborhood . Its starting to look like zombie and gangbanger land more and more. Even if Opd was at full staff this part of Oakland and many other parts would still be a " shithole". I'm glad no one got hurt. Be careful visiting over there cause the zombies and gangbangers think your an easy mark .

I think the youth of Oakland is more of a joke the OPD. I know 2 OPD officers and 3 Oakland firefighters and a paramedic. The stories are unreal.

Id definitely make sure to carry something. I sleep with a firearm next to my pillow every night. We hear gun shots atleast once a week from the corner and about a month ago some dumbass hit my house like 4 times with a 40. Too bad i wasnt home but my mom was there to tell me what happened

I don't think the op is black or the person that talked about snitching is black. the area the op wasvisiting isn't black. i believe whatever color the op is it wouldn't have stopped him from saying all he saw was a gold Buick lesabre or whatever it was. I'm always in oakland due to my grandpa living off of high st, my ex living near mac and 73rd, and my other buddy living on 51st, but never have I seen someone shooting 200 feet away from me at someone else. Regaurdless.. if OPD can't respond to a call like that, then something is wrong with the department.. like we didn't already know [BS flag]

Do I own a gun? No. Should I? Probably. I know its been said before, but the fact that us innocent people need to carry concealed weapons just to be safe is just bs. Its like survival of the fittest nowadays.

. I didn't hear about this. Im usually up on allot of workplace bs and what not. I was off work for a couple weeks on vacation. Maybe they responded fast because of the area or because the calls were low for that time of day during the work week for Opd. You should of picked up the couple pieces of paper you dropped on the ground lol

How Opd chooses to do there job is baffling sometimes. I can drive my Mustang in the same area the op said the shooting happened in and get pulled over and checked out for whatever reason they come up with, a couple of times right infront of my house. never once cited for anything. Thanks I guess . But you see them daily pass right through known border brothers(gang members), known drug dealers and zombies with out cheking them out. When they do jump out on a known or suspected drug dealer its a total surprise to see them do what you expect them to do, get these people off the streets who dont care about anything. i hope Opd does get the cops they need to do the job and do it justly.

From what I understand that department is understaffed, has low morale, and works in one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Because if this, there is also a high attrition rate and they are constantly hiring. Look at the leadership of that town...it's a reflection of the city. They aren't exactly pro-law enforcement.

yeah, im hispanic but I don't understand how its ok to make blanket statements or racial statements about white people but it gets demonized when a white dude does the same .

Anyways as long as people don't really want the gang bangers and low lives to really pay for their crimes then their communities will never get better. But they'll still complain about it. Weird.

I honestly wish they would give the good folks of Oakland a weeks notice to leave, then burn the rest of it to the ground along with all the people in it. You live in a low class scumbag area, youre going to be at the bottom of the foodchain when it comes to emergency help. Thats just the way it is. Crime is considered the normal daily life in Oakland.

I can call 911 and have cops and an ambulance here in 5 mins, Because i live in a higher class area and get treated as such. I woke up to a robber in my house in 2007, I left and moved to the upper class the very next month. Those of you who stay in the ghetto and embrace it, Thats your choice but dont come crying when you need help because you choose to "rep yo city" instead of getting the hell out and moving to a higher class area for you and your family. The low class scum bag areas like Oakland are treated as low as prisoners, this is why nobody usually comes to help.

Like warhorse said, thugs are all about not snitching and keeping their "gangsta" rep. Why would a cop even bother coming out if they are just going to be the "punk azz pigz" and be blantly disrespected by a bunch of ghetto youth piles of shit who will never amount to anything in life? There are good people in Oakland who have to live in that shithole who cant get help in a timely matter because of the lowlifes who ruin it for the rest of them. I feel sorry for them.

Robb, there's a lot of truth to what you are saying. Let's look at the numbers.

First Oakland is a population of 400,000, but the majority of the crime occurs in West and East Oakland (districts 3, 6,& 7). 72% of the homocides occur there even though it only accounts for 44% of the total Oakland population. Next, let's look at annual crime:

We can complain all day about this, but the numbers don't lie and that's just the way it is. If you choose to live in an area where the crime is off the charts and the police force is only 640 officers, you can expect that the response just won't be typical.

If you don't like it, either become part of the solution be getting involved in your city or move out.

One gentleman who I know that is involved in law enforcement rolled out the following to me. He said that in Oakland, an overwhelming majority of the homocide crime is gang on gang (I've seen data that disputes this to be fair). Therefore when shots ring out in East/West Oakland deep in the night, rushing to the scene and risking law enforcement lives to break up/protect gang members, isn't high on the priority list. As horrible as it sounds, they often prefer to pick up the pieces in the aftermath than get involved while it's happening. Gang members killing eachother is a limited concern.

And lastly, don't overlook how difficult and stressful the lives of OPD are. Those folks are doing a job most of us wouldn't dare to touch.
